Making a Pillow Case Dress without a pillowcase

I want to make a pillow case dress out of regular fabric.
How wide would you make it?
I've thought about just measuring a pillowcase to see how wide it is, but it looks so big compared to my 9m/o DD.

Anyone have instructions or tips for making a pillowcase dress without a pillowcase?

If you do a search on google for 'pillowcase dress tutorial' like 10 will come up, there is a couple that come up on top and tell you how to measure the fabric to the right sizes

Depending the size of the child you are sewing for you can just make a tube with a length of fabric. You're just going to end up with a casing on one end and a hem on the other end. There are online tuts, but you definitely don't need to have a pillowcase to make one.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering--how wide does that tube need to be? For a 9-12 month old?
