Which do you prefer for a NEWBORN?

Snappis or good, metal head pins?

plastic animal shaped diaper pins were my choice.

Pins are a piece of cake, I think they are easier than a snappi.

I prefer pins. My partner prefers snappis.

Snappis are faster and easier, and stay put when the baby is not very mobile. For an active toddler though, pins are better.

It's quicker for me to get the diaper on with a Snappi, but I've never had a baby/toddler get accidently pinned to the carpet. DD1 got Snappi'd to the carpet on the stairs when she was learning to crawl up them one day and was very frustrated! (All my covers were in the wash, so she was coverless.)

I'm curious about many of those who prefer snappis - did you try pins first or use both and prefer the snappi, or did you just go straight to the snappi and like it a lot?

I used a Snappi first and tried good metal pins later. I prefer the Snappi, especially on a newborn, b/c they fold their little legs up so tight that it can be hard to get the pin in there.

snappi's--make for quicker dipe changes ---I sound like an ad
post #9 of 24
With DD I used a Snappi for about the first two weeks while getting used to CDing a newborn. While pinning a dipe on DS is a breeze, it was harder than I thought it would be to pin a dipe on a newborn, but I worked on it while having the Snappi on hand for instances when it just wasn't working out. With both babes I really find I can't get the dipe tight enough around the leg and prevent blowouts with a Snappi. I think in the short run, pins are way more frustrating, but in the long run they work much better.

Ditto that completely, but after getting two with a used diaper pack I bought I never bothered to buy more as I just preferred pins.

Snappi's.
I had a hard time getting the pins through the cloth and when I ran them through my hair, I always poked myself.

ALso - I think snappi's make it fit tighter

Hair? I've never heard of that one! I always kept a bar of soap in my pin bag.

I voted pins, but in all fairness I only HAD pins 14.5 years ago when I was CDing a newborn (for a variety of reasons, DD2 and DS weren't CDed until they were bigger babies.)

I'm not sure if snappis existed 11-14 years ago (when I was CDing my daughters) or not, but I didn't have access to them if they did. I read about them when DS was a baby, but had no interest in trying them since I was already comfortable with diaper pins, and anyway I had a lot of fun sewing different kinds of velcro covers, side snapping fitteds, etc.

Ruth, I don't believe they were around 14 years ago.

They were not 19 years ago when I diapered my first.

I liked pins on my newborn since I could leave the diaper looser around his cord stump, and leave him coverless without worrying about him pulling the snappi off and hurting himself on it. Also, I was using very thin diapers in the first days and was afraid of clawing is swollen scrotem with the snappi claws :

The hair thing works, seriously! You do have to be careful though. I just run it through right next to the scalp and it zips right through the dipe.

I didn't vote because I never used either. For a newborn I always just placed the diaper in a wrap.

Did you just trifold them? That seems so much easier to me-- but I guess I've been nervous that it won't contain that early newborn poop!

For a NEWBORN, Snappis. For an older baby, pins. And it's a good idea to use pins at least some of the time with a newborn so you can get good practice in before the wiggling starts.

See I am the opposite.
