Don't know what's up with ds! xposted Health and Healing

Not sure what, if anything, is going on with ds
My younger son is going to be 3 in May. He's always been small, born at the 10th percentile and has never gotten above it, though he does dip way below it from time to time. His bowel movements have always gone through phases where they are "funny". Usually a couple of days a week, sometimes more or less often, he'll have a day where he has as many as 6-10 bowel movements in a day. They are runny, and mucusy, though scant. Then, for a day or two, he'll have 1 or 2 seemingly "normal" (formed or mostly formed), bowel movements in a day. This has been pretty much his whole life (since he's been eating solids, anyway).

What has finally made me look askance at this trend in his bowel habits (and maybe I should've long ago, but he's seemed otherwise very healthy), is that he has recently been displaying an extreme susceptibility to GI infections/viruses. He was sick with vomiting and diarrhea for more than 10 days, a little over a month ago, and is now on day 2 of another tummy bug. Everyone else I know of who got sick with it last time (including my older ds, my husband, and me), was more or less normal after 48-72 hours of it).

Could there be some underlying chronic condition causing both his chronic symptoms, and his susceptibility to stomach bugs? Really, if he weren't still nursing, he'd have been hospitalized last time, and would be heading that way this time, too. Anyone else have a child with similar problems? I'm considering requesting his ped do allergy testing, including maybe celiac, but I don't want to jump the gun and put him through a bunch of unnecessary procedures, either. Poor sick baby.

your ds's stool def sound like allergy symptoms. my dd always follows those same trends with food reactions. can you keep a food journal and try to examine both of your diets for allergens? if you suspect celiac, you could elim gluten (though it can take 3 mons to fully clear your system) and see if it helps him. my dd responded well within 48 hours of removing gluten. hth!
btw, i think in general his immune system would be burdened if he is constantly being exposed to allergens, hence the prolonged bugs.

Since the gut plays a huge role in the immune system, and particularly for stomach bugs, I'd say that getting lots of stomach bugs, and them being more severe, is mostly a sign that the bacterial balance in his gut is off. And weird poop would go along with that.

For my daughter, her poop got better when we took out gluten, but I still have to provide a lot of probiotic-rich foods in order to get formed brown poop on a consistent basis. I make kimchee and sour pickles, they are really easy to make and very tasty. If dairy is okay, kefir is a great source of probiotics too.

I'd say it's hard to know if there's a food intolerance or just a poor bacterial balance in the gut, or if a food intolerance is leading to a bad bacterial mix. A lot of these things can build on each other. Gluten and dairy are fairly common allergens (in the sense of true allergies or intolerances, probably more the latter, which don't show up on regular allergy testing) so those would be two to look into.

Thanks for the information!
TL, I've been dying to try my hand at some home-fermentation. Kimchee sounds like a good place to start. If I can just keep from eating it all, and get some into the kid...

Are there any probiotic supplements designed for children?

I got one for my DS that was sweetened with Xylitol and it was a grape (or maybe berry) powder that you dissolved on your tongue. He liked it. If I could only remember the name... I got it online. It was called Pro2Go.

For us, we do coconut milk yogurt with non-dairy starter and I have GIprox12 probiotics that are capsules that I empty into their smoothies.
