Honey from Azure

In light of the recent posting by Pat re: what the bees are eating I decided to contact Azure about their honey and thought you all would be interested in the response!!!

The clover honey that we currently have comes from a beekeeper in South Dakota. He does feed the bees some cane sugar during the late fall early winter then takes them to California to pollinate almonds. As soon as the almond season is over he takes the bee to Texas to build up, split, and produce queens on the early flowering plants that are abundant in that area but does not take honey from that area it is all left for the bees to eat. In the summer they are then taken to South Dakota to the sweet clover and that is where the honey crop is made, and they are on that until frost in the fall. He then takes off most of the honey and they are moved to California around the end of the year and fed sugar to build them up enough to be able to be strong hives for pollination. These are the best practices that we have found in a commercial honey operation. From the time the sugar is fed until the honey is produced is about five months, quite a few “bee generations” and we safely feel there is not any sugar content in the honey.

I asked about pesticides herbicides and fungicides on the almonds and got this reply:

There is always that possibility in a populated area as bees cannot be fenced in will travel several miles at times while foraging. The almonds themselves would not have any fresh applications of chemicals as even the commercial growers do not put anything on prior to bloom as they bloom very early and there is no need to do so.

Hope that is helpful to some folks here!

Yes- thank you! We just opened our second gallon of Azure honey today. I noticed that it has a different smell and taste than the first one, and I'm curious to see how DD will tolerate it.
