Hey guys,
Thanks so much for all of the support, stories and advice. I have a very limited time to type this -- so please excuse the brevity. Tobin is SO much better today -- I talked to Marylin at nocirc.org last night -- very helpful, awesome lady - thanks to whoever posted her info. She didn't have any answers about the blocked urine and gave me the # of a ped. I called him at home and he was amazing. He asked if it could be a yeast infection that originally caused swelling. This totally fits because Tobin has enlarged adenoids, environmental and food allergies AND a history of sinus infections. So he has been on antibiotics more than I would have liked (Can't seem to cure the sinus infections naturally -- but that is another story). So we treated with diflucan last night - and started the steroid cream to prevent adhesions (betamethasone). He is 10000 times better today. He fusses when he urinates, but it is nothing like what happened last night. I really think the yeast was a factor. Thank you again -- I really needed you guys last night -- and you totally came through for me. Thank you! Rachel |
When you apply the steroidal cream, just dabb it on the tip. You don't need to try to retract or manipulate him. The cream works well on it's own. We used it for 7 days 3 times a day. We were astounded at how much it helped. Make sure you stop after 7 days b/c the cream is not good for long-term use. You will not need it after that anyway.
If you see your son urinate or if he is potty trained soon, you may notice him having ballooning. This is not a problem, you don't have to worry about it. Ballooning happens b/c the opening is still small and the foreskin has separated. The ballooning will go away with sexual maturity as hormones replace the fiberous cells with more elasticy cells. Once this happens, through self-discovery, he will become retractable. Sterile urine passing under the foreskin will actually help prevent the foreskin from reattaching itself to the glands.

I think our stories have something very important to teach mothers of intact boys: On rare occasion, when separation comes prematurely for whatever reason, whether it be swelling or trauma, the separation episode can be much more painful than what normally occurs. However, as with all things in childhood, this too can be managed.
You will see a huge improvement in the next 2 days! I promise.
You know what is quite funny? I suspected yeast (along with the doc that tried to retract) is what caused my son to swell and the opening to narrow too! One doc tried to tell me it was a bacterial infection and I was sure it was not. I treated my son for yeast after we finished with the steroidal cream. My son had internal yeast so it was likely to be on his genitals too.
