Hi! I haven't been on here for a long time. I am a foster mom that just had a 3month old preemie brought here on Monday. He has had runny yellow poop since he came. His bio dad always told the social worker that he was constipated. My big question is now he doesn't seem to stop pooping. He has a yeast infection on his tush, he has reflux and is medicated with Losec(was on Zantac) takes tri-vi-sol vitamins, and fer-in -sol for iron supplements. He drinks Similac Neosure for preemies. His bum is so red that I almost cry when I need to change him (which is about every hour). Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to help this little guy. By the way I use cloth diapers on him. Microfleece interior but usually I put in a flannel wash cloth to help with the poo. TIA

well it all could be a GI yeast infection. I would take him to the Dr asap, and have them do a stool check.

Also it couldn't hurt to try him out on neocate or nutramagin (if he will take it) and if that is ok for him to take since he is premi. You might want to talk to the dr and see if they can make a condensed version of the hypoallergenic formula with a higher calorie intake. Im not familiar with premi formulas so i am not sure what they are all about.

It certainly could be a milk issue, but it could also be a yeast overgrowth.

You could soak his little bum in some baking soda and warm water, that always helped my dd, and some calendula lotion too.

I've heard of some foster parents not being able to change formulas, not sure if that's the case, but it certainly sounds like he is sensitive to something. Was the baby fed something different when he was constipated than when he was brought to you? Reflux can be caused by food intolerance or structural issues.

No, he is on the same formula as before. I wouldn't change it without permission. He is finally settled down. I did give him a quick soak in baking soda.

With yeast problems it's sometimes best to switch to sposies for awhile. A) I know none of us ever want to admit it but sposies do pull moisture away from thier bottom better and B) once the yeastie beasties get into your cloth diapers they're hard to get out! A regular washing won't always get the yeast out and then baby is continually getting re-infected by wearing the yeasty dipes. I've fought many a yeast infection battle with my first. Depending on types of dipes I have found the best way to get rid of yeast is to either boil them for a long time or wash them with a little bleach (yes, I know, bleach is also a big no no but it's about the only thing that kills the yeast!).

You also didn't mention a cream for the yeast infection? If he's not on one you can use regular OTC lotrimin from the foot aisle until you can get an Rx. Lotrimin always worked really great on my ds...usually just as good as the prescription stuff.
