Cod liver oil brand for infant?

DD is almost 1 and I want to give her cod liver oil. Most of the brands like Carlson say it's for 2 and up. Is anyone giving their infant CLO. If so which brand? I don't like the CHild's Life brand because it has a bunch of other stuff in it. TIA

Thanks. How old is your DC and do you give it straight or mix with something? Thx!

We started when he started solids which was about 10 mo of age. I just squirt it in his mouth. He's never seemed to mind if we chased it with a drink of raw milk (now) or nursing (when he was younger). It probably helps that he sees me squirt it in my mouth and then drink some milk.

I'm curious as to why carlson's say not til the baby is 2? I wouldnt assume there is no difference between the good brads- though maybe there is worry of Vitamin A overload?

I'm going to call customer service tomorrow and ask because I'm curious too but I don't think their vitamin a is above the recommended amount for an infant/toddler. I'll report back and let you know what they say.

DD's pediatrician says supplements are not necessary but my mother gave us cod liver oil as babies. We were never sick. Is cod liver oil the same as an Omega 3?

Cod Liver Oil provides vitamin D which according to my naturopath is critical to avoiding illness. If you live someplace where there is limited sunlight (like around here in the land of rain), most people have very low vitamin D levels and are more likely to get sick.

I've been giving ds2 Carlson's CLO for a while now, and he'll be 2 in June. He loves it. Of course, he loves anything that ds1 does (and ds1 does love his CLO).

Maybe ds2 is just really healthy, but he rarely gets sick. I definitely don't think the CLO has been hurting him any!

Thanks. My mother gave us CLO as infants and we were never sick either. She insists it was from the CLO. I'm going to see if I can get it from Whole Foods 2morrow. Our neighborhood "health" food store has nothing healthy. LOL

I just called Carlson Labs customer service and was told because of the vitamin a and d, they only recommend it for two years and up and are not comfortable saying it's okay to give to an infant. I was under the impression infants needed vitamin a and d for their immune systems especially D. I recently read a study on Vitamin D being more effective than any flu shot.

I feel comfortable giving her half a teaspoon a day. My mother did it with us and as I said before me and my siblings were never sick and when I did get chicken pox my mother said other than all of the pox marks you wouldn't know I was sick because I wasn't at all bothered. What say you all about the vit a and d?

FYI since you use Carlson's. If you call customer service and ask for a coupon they'll send you $5.00 off as well as literature about the products. I'm a company calling/coupon fiend so call!

hmm well I think it depends on the baby, the mother's diet and health and where they live.

if a mother eats traditionally and isn't low on vitamin D or A, the baby should get PLENTY through the breastmilk. However if the mom is deficient (which a LOT of american people are) then one might want to consider a supplement with a baby.

if not breastfeeding, then I would focus mosly on Raw milk (goat or cow), liver/organ meats and dark greens. if I felt the kid still wasn't getting enough I would use CLO.

for my daughter she was seriously defiecient (I think b/c I was so deficient while pregnant and breastfeeding and dind't realize it) so she is no on CLO and it's made a HUGE difference in her life. this pregnancy I'm trying hard to set this kid up for the right stuff from the get go. I will supplement if/when needed.

Great info. Thanks!

I started supplementing DD with twinlab CLO at 6 months because we live in the north. I just give it to her straight. I gave her a half dose. The flavored variations taste worse than the regular.

We do TwinLab regular CLO too. Maybe not the best brand (would rather be doing the BlueIce Raw fermented), but it's cheap and they don't add synthetic vitamins. I put it in a dropped and squeeze it into DD's (and my) mouth. She loves it.

eta: I also supplement myself with D3 for immune support since that will transfer through breastmilk.
