Circumcision significantly reduces the risk of contracting herpes and human papillomavirus, says a new study that adds to the growing scientific evidence that the procedure helps stem the spread of some sexually transmitted diseases.

Circumcised heterosexual men are 35% less likely to contract human papillomavirus (HPV) and 25% less likely to catch herpes than their uncircumcised counterparts, according to the study, published in this week's New England Journal of Medicine.

guess I'd be less likely to get herpes without my labia. Idiots.

This data is from the flawed African studies.

And for every article claiming benefits of circ in reducing STD, I can find an article/study showing no protection or circ'd men with higher levels of infection.

Plus circed men just don't show infection as much but they still get them. They are asymptomatic which makes them even more of a threat their partners.

It's astounding the lengths the pro-circ'ers in the medical community will go just to get their $$$. It's why I don't trust anything that scientists and/or doctors fully agree on. I grow suspicious about those things because to me it indicates that perhaps there's some cash to be had. Thank God the internet is here also to inform and educate.

I can take solace in that there's no way I let any son of mine go through it and no way I let anyone make that decision before hearing the facts as they really are, not as some idiotic greedy, callous doctors willing to forgo ethics and decency just because they think they're healing the world of illness by cutting off part of a newborn's penis, would have you believe.

Guys, chill the anti-science, anti-doctor talk. That's only going to set us back and alienate people we really need to win around...

I didn't bother reading the study. This argument can be refuted with one word: MONOGAMY!

If we teach our children to live monogamously, there won't be a problem with STDs.

Bye Bye risk.

Look at the difference in the way foreign media outlets are reporting this story:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7960798.stm

Quote:
Dr Colm O'Mahony, a sexual health expert from the Countess of Chester Foundation Trust Hospital in Chester, said the US had an "obsession" with circumcision being the answer to controlling sexually transmitted infections.

He said: "Sure, a dry skinned penis is a bit less likely to contract HIV, herpes and possibly genital warts but it will get infected eventually."

Dr O'Mahony also said pushing circumcision as a solution sent the wrong message.

"It suggests that it is women who infect innocent men - let's protect the innocent men.

I know this is just anecdotal, but... more than 80% of the women I know (mid 30's age) have HPV in some form. All of them have only had cut partners. The few that I know that don't have HPV have intact partners. Almost our whole generation of men are cut, yet HPV is super common in both men and women. What about Europe compared to the US, what kind of HPV rates are they dealing with?

I especially love how our media never reports on the human rights aspect of it. I don't care if they could prove it prevented it 100% we don't have the right to slice things off unconsenting newborns. I'd love to see the outrage if a group tried to publish a similar study about the benefits of female circumsision. I'll take my chances with all my parts thank you very much.
