I thought people might be interested in commenting on this article "Men in Church." Not just in relationship to Orthodoxy, but also men in church in general.

A very interesting article. I am not sure I agree completely with the author's portrayal of Orthodoxy, but certainly the lack of sentimentality could be a factor. Since becoming Orthodox, I tend to find most other Christian religions far too emotional and slushy.

This is sad, but he may be right to some extent.

I wonder how many men there are in peoples churches. We have more women, but not a lot more. At my old church, it was about 1:5 for the women. In university at the chapel it was almost even. Typically most Anglican churches have more women.

I read a very interesting book a few years back:

The Church Impotent: The Feminization of Christianity by Leon Podles
http://www.amazon.com/Church-Impoten.../dp/1890626198

I'm Orthodox, and I remember one bit from the book that really stuck with me. It's something along the lines that Russian Orthodoxy is the only Church that writes music for basso profoundo (sp?).

I will say that "Orthodoxy is not for wusses." Our spiritual disciplines alone cause a great deal of people to go "What??" Going essentially vegan during about half the year leaves a lot of people with their jaws on the floor (I've witnessed this myself." The long services.

We're not afraid to talk about sin, unlike some Christian bodies today.

Definitely agree with the lack of sentimentality.
