Kefir woes

I feel so bad - I'm worried I killed them.

I got some milk kefir grains from a nice lady last Saturday. I put them in goat milk, strained after two days, gave them more milk. The first batch was GREAT! I got super excited!

But then the second batch was yeasty smelling. And DS drank more goat milk then expected so I ended up using cow milk (organic) for the next batch. Also very yeasty. So I rinsed the grains in some milk (we don't have any non-chlorinated water right now) and put them back in last night with some more organic cow milk.

Now they smell really yeasty and they're floating! Did I kill them? Is there any way to tell? And if they are having problems can I bring them back?

Someone mentioned this just the other day - hope it helps some:

Very hard to kill kefir grains - they're just off balance for some reason. Giving them a few cycles will help them change. Sometimes it takes them a few cycles to get used to the new milk too.
