confusing meaning of name... "my God is a vow"

I like the name Lillian and it means in Hebrew "my God is a vow". But what does that mean?

but I would take "my god is a vow" to mean that this person has found religion, or their god, by taking a vow. Like a vow of silence, Chasity, charity. god has become part of their life.

THANKS! that's sounds plausible.. i've seen that it means lilly and stuff.. its the vow thing i can't figure out.. i also wondered if it was an ancient swear -- like not a bad thing.. but like a something you say to keep your word.. but that was my guess.. i cant find any explanation online..

I also found that Elizabeth means "God is my vow," and that Lillian can be a shortening of Elizabeth. It would make sense, based on the story of Elizabeth in the New Testament (who gave birth to John the Baptist while she and her husband were at a very "advanced age", and then John the Baptist preached the coming of Jesus, etc....) that her name expresses a kind of commitment to God, since God allowed her, a barren woman, to give birth. It would be like saying, "God has answered my prayers" or "God is my promise." Hope that helps!

Forgive my ignorance but from someone who is familiar with Hebrew, how does Lillian mean anything in Hebrew? I can't think of any Hebrew name counterpart to match it up with to think how it would have a Hebrew translation.

Ok, I googled a bit and that site seems to be the only site that even lists it as having a Hebrew meaning. No other site lists it as having any Hebrew meaning. I see mostly English and Latin as origins.

I did a little research. Lillian has two possible origins: from Lily (the flower) or from Elizabeth. Acccording to wiki.name.com, Elizabeth comes from the Hebrew word Elisheba which means either "devoted to God" or "consecrated to God"

Elisheva is a (beautiful) name but it just seemed like a stretch to bring it to Elizabeth and then to Lillian. Perhaps it was though. It's funny but for someone who knows the original pronounciation, Elizabeth does seem far off from Elisheva.

My daughter name is Isabelle, every were i search all i find is ether it means Elizbeth or My god is my vow, i cant find anywere the meaning behinde this, finding it annoying as i know the meaning to my other childrens name and i know the meaning has expressed who they are, i cant work out if Isabelles does as i have no idea what her name means :(
