Are Prefolds Really Easier? - Page 2

I have done pockets, AIO, and prefolds. I don't think prefolds are easier than pockets. Cheaper? Yes. But depending on the cover, you have to lanolize, scrub the poop off, and wash the covers. And some covers aren't cheap. I was constantly losing snappis, too. Pockets were very easy for us - grab one and go. And pockets were the only thing that dd could wear at night once she reached 1 or so, because prefolds just didn't hold her pee.

What ended up working really well for us was using a folded prefold in a BSWW or wool cover w/o a snappi. Our wool covers are all stained now, though, but our BSWW are in great shape.

Oh, and we did have to do two sizes of prefolds - the infant and the toddler. Both sizes still look like new.

For me, prefolds were easier than pockets when you factor the time spent occasionally stripping the pockets (we have wicked hard water), stuffing the pockets (I used Joey Bunz and microfiber inserts) and scrubbing rash cream off the fleece of the pockets with Dawn dish soap. I tend to look at the overall picture, though, not just the day to day ease of just putting the dipe on, etc.

You do NOT have to pin or use snappies. Simply fold and place the prefold inside the diaper cover. That's it. Not much learning curve there.

OS pockets are trim. Prefold isn't as trim as OS pockets or AIO, but it'll last longer.

I use all of them. I use Prefold/cover at home. I use OS pocket for night and out and about. And AIO for whenever I want trim fit. Now that my daughter is walking and active, I like trim fit. I've been using more of OS and AIOs now compare to when my daughter was younger.

So many people make the leap and follow the crowd and buy or change because of another two cents. Often times approaching the diapering world in buying an entire stash of one diaper because EVERYONE at that moment loves them and they end up hating the or they chose and non natural fibered product and their child cannot tolerate them.

Honestly, buy 4, buy one cover and a set of pins a simple 25.00 investment and roll from there and build your own experience.

Blogger offers good info, but is self still fairly new at the cding too.

I will probably but a few of each thing and give them all a try.. I would probably do snappis not pins though because I would be scared of pinning DS when he was trying to escape from me!!

What's the washing routine with prefolds? And what exactly are Snappis? I'm intrigued!

Snappis are like an alternative to pins... its a plastic doo-dad with 3 arms that holds the diaper in place I am sure that was a very not helpful explanation but I am not sure how to describe it!! I would guess the washing routine for PFs is the same as anything else really...

Prefolds do last a long time. I'm currently using some that were given to me by a friend who used them on her now 14 year old son. I used them on my now 10 year old, 7 year old, 5 year old and now on my 20 month old. They're very soft, although some are starting to get worn out.

I bought newborn prefolds almost 9 years ago. They pretty much wore out with my last baby, but are still in service and dusting/cleaning rags, holes and all.

That is one of the great things about prefolds, they make excellent dusting/cleaning/wiping up spill rags when you're done with diapering. The fitted diapers I've used over the years just ended up getting tossed when they were too holey/worn out for diapering purposes.

Bikini twist is my favourite fold too. I've been using pins for so long that I barely even give it a second though anymore, but a snappi is probably a good alternative for a nervous new user.

As long as you use a good tight wrap cover and don't mind the poop getting onto the cover sometimes, yes prefolds are easy. They also last like four times as long as any fitted/pocket/aio. They're the most cost effective. I have prefolds I bought when #1 was a newborn that we still use as rags! They last FOREVER.

I prefer diapers with elastic really, but I always get some prefolds to round out my stash. They're just so cheap and useful!

Honestly, snappi's scare me, not the pins. I loved my prefold's, but also loved my fitted's.
AIO's usually leaked to some degree, took F o r e v e e e r to dry and I don't do synthetic only natural fiber diapers. Prefold's were easy, cheap,natural and last - pinned or snappi'd or just in a wrap.

video of putting on a prefold with a snappi

I had no idea what a snappi was until I watched this and all of sudden things came together for me. After seeing this I thought maybe prefolds aren't so bad! The video quality is kinda poor cause I think shes holding the camera while changing her baby but it did the trick.

I've CDed for two years with prefolds and fitteds and OS pockets. I think prefolds are the most adjustable, most absorbent, and cleanest diaper. And if you want easy, wash-with-the-diapers covers, try Blue Penguin POSO (pull on snap off). They are my workhorse over a snappied prefold.

I had a steep learning curve with the Snappi, and I did not like the trifold method. But now I can get snug leg openings and the poop stays inside the diaper. Here's a youtube video on the "jelly roll" fold. It's very useful.

IME, trifold is fantastic for newborns when you're pretty much going to have to change the cover every time they poop anyhow, so may as well save a step of folding... and then once you start getting a little more sleep, look into the secured folds

I love prefolds until baby is mobile...then trimness becomes more important. OP, you said that you wished they made fitteds that you could snappi - I dont know how you feel about hemp, but I have one of these and it's pretty nice (and one-size): http://www.jamtots.com/JamTots-Eezi-...apers-C49.aspx
Alternatively, if you have some time and are able to sew, the RRP diaper is similar to the jamtots: http://handmadebyrita.blogspot.com/2...t-pattern.html
