DH bothered by washing diapers

We are in the process of getting our stash together for our first baby.. DH asked me about washing the dirty diapers and I told him that when they are little on breastmilk, they don't have much solids so it just disolves (true, right?). Well, he doesn't like the idea of washing those in the same washer as our clothes... has anyone else had this problem or concern?

My DH has the same concern but I told him breastmilk poo is water soluble. Plus when the little one has a poop blowout or vomits the clothes would go in the washer anyway, right?

DH actually said before marriage this was so terrible for him that it was a dealbreaker.

He is the oldest of 9 and his mom CDed for all of them. He hates it with a passion. Talk about stinky baggage teehee.

Anyways, that is why I do pt EC and sposies overnight/traveling.

I wouldn't be concerned about using the same washer, but I would do separate loads (e.g. clothes separate from diapers).

EBF baby poo seems to me to be one of the most innocent substances in the world lol.

if it were my dh, the conversation would go something like:

"*I* feel comfortable putting his diapers in the washer as-is, until he starts solids. If *you* are grossed out by it, then *you* are more than welcome to dunk/spray/whatever to your heart's content."

We never had any issues. You could always do an empty vinegar-only rinse cycle after CDs are done washing if it would put his mind at rest.

I mean, if he's home to see you washing diapers...

Thanks for all the advice. He is so funny. I think he just has no idea what to expect and it freaks him out a little. I might get a sprayer anyway, so maybe that will help.

My Dh has realted issues to CD'ing. We had to negotiate this.

Our agreement was that he keeps his mouth shut about the diapers (I do the laundry, he just needs to put them on the baby without complaining)

And in return we got Netflix with the some odf the $$ we save by CD'ing.

It has worked very well.

DH was sorta insistent on us getting a sprayer (and for some reason, thought he'd wear gloves when changing diapers . . . like that ever happened. . .).

Lemmee just say that baby poop is completely different than grown up poop, and eventually they'll realize this. I assume that's what your DH pictures getting tossed in the washer.

I'd have an issue with that as well, actually. I can understand where he's coming from! I hope you get it figured out!

I don't like tossing the dirty diaps into the washer as is either, mostly because our washer emptys into a utility sink and I can see the bits of poo stuck to the sides (it does NOT dissolve).

My solution was to line her diaps. The liner gets tossed and the relatively unsoiled diaper goes in the diaper pail. I am too cheap to spring for the flushable liners (which I fear would clog our ancient plumbing) so I use Viva brand paper towels cut down the middle. When she is older and is on solids, I will fold the paper towels in half to better support the poo. I use disposible wipes, so the used paper towels go in the same garbage as the used wipes. Easy peasy - very little poo left on the diaps and less trouble with stink.

Just think of what else goes into that washer.

In the past 24 hours I've run a load of urinated-on bed coverings (wrap, sheet, blankets, pillow), a load of "clothing worn while drywalling", and a load of "various clothes used to wash vehicles".

The clothes used to wash vehicles had all sorts of nasty chemicals on them, road dust, grease.

The clothing worn while drywalling had drywall mud, drywall dust, TSP, primer, etc.

The urinated-upon bed coverings are the fact of life with a kid who is partly night-time potty trained.

Washers are designed to handle all this. They can handle and wash away the residues of baby poop.

Also since this is your first, here are a few of the things that I (who have no children) have washed in the past week

Motor oil
Break fluid
Blood
Urine
Vomit
Grass stain
medium quantity of rocks
a vice grip
ball point pen
dog poop

As pp said, so much other stuff gets on your clothes. The first few weeks with a nb, we always had so much stuff that was peed and pooed on anyway-it always seemed that they would pee as soon as I took the diaper off, as I was putting them in the bath ,etc. DD2 would always poo as soon as the diaper came off. Clothes, changing pads, etc. would need washing. This would have been an issue with or without CDs.

Once your child is on solids, you can opt to use liners, but the sprayer goes a long way to getting the mess off.

I assume that your hubby wears underwear? Does it go in the washer? I'm pretty sure those aren't sterile going into the washer

I'm more uncomfortable washing the guys undies around her than I am with the baby's diapers

Lots of pooped on stuff goes in the washer even when using disposables! Babies are CONSTANTLY having blow-outs in sposies, and the dirty clothes all go in the washer, right?

I'd say "Let's readdress this after a couple of weeks & see how it goes". He'll probably find it is less of an issue than he thinks it is. He could always wash out the washing machine after each wash (we do this with all the machines at my mom's laundromat every night - it only takes a minute).

I think my 20 year old washer smells better now that diapers go in there than it did before. I think it's due to all the precautionary (is that a word?) cycles run with boiling water and vinager an just a tad of bleach to keep things stripped and white. It was a lot of motor oil and dead skin before!

Amen. Does he not understand that we are all covered in bacteria all the time?

Just don't make HIM wash them.

He will forget quickly. Or if he complains, offer to turn over the task of dunking and swishing in exchange for washing detail. Might nip that convo in the bud real quick.
