Micro-terry insert odor problem

Hi all:

I have only been cloth diapering for about two months and so far, I love it. I have a toddler and an infant that are in diapers currently.

I use prefolds with covers during the day and they work great. At night I have some pocket diapers and an AIO. The four nighttime diapers I have are as follows:

BumGenuis 3.0 AIO size Medium
BumGenius 3.0 OS Pocket with micro-terry inserts (I double up at night)
Tiny Tush Pocket with micro-terry inserts
Blueberry one-size pocket with a partial micro-terry insert. It has three pieces and two I think are hemp(???) and one part is micro-terry

So, all of my nighttime diapers have micro-terry parts. In the BumGenius AIO, it does not smell bad. But ALL of the micro-terry parts to my other nighttime diapers smell bad.

I've tried stripping the diapers, using Bac-Out sprayed directly on them, switching detergents, an EXTRA extra rinse after two wash cycles (cold, then hot), even bleach. For whatever reason, I cannot get the slight ammonia/icky smell out of them. All of my pre-folds and covers smell fresh and clean. They are not stained at all. BUT all the micro-terry inserts smell icky and have stains. With the Blueberry diaper, the parts that are made of hemp and fleece smell clean, but the micro-terry part smells bad. I don't understand it.

Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!

I wish I had an answer for you...but I did want to say that I switched from using BG pocket diapers (with microfiber inserts) to using prefolds only because I was experiencing the same problem. I just couldn't lose the stink!! I hope you find something that works.

I had an ammonia stink poblem in my mf inserts. I took a 5gal bucket put the inserts in, dumped in a bunch of white vinegar & added enough water to cover. Then I let it sit overnight. In the morning I dumped the vin & water out, rinsed them, then washed as usual. I have no more stink

You may get a better outcome with natural fibered inserts.

Do this to fix the problem.

Then, add vinegar to your cold prewash. Ammonia smell is cause by a buildup of ammonia salts from the baby's urine. B/c microfiber is so absorbent, it can hold onto smell more than other fibers. Adding vinegar to every prewash dissolves the ammonia.

We haven't had any ammonia since starting the vinegar one year ago.
