Help...son in pain

Hi,

My 3yo uncirc'd ds has been complaining of pain a couple of times now. When I looked it seemed the tip of his foreskin was red and slightly inflamed...I didn't look any further.

I've done some reading and think that we'll try the baking soda bath and I'm going to get some liquid acidophilus...but was hoping to get some reassurance here.

Anything else I should do, watch out for?

Thank you!

Wanted to add that i did notice him pulling at his penis yesterday and the day before, a lot, through his clothes. I thought it is because he is newly wearing underpants...but it probably has something to do with whatever is going on.

My son's looked the same a few months ago and my ped said it was yeast and suggested lotrimin creme on it at each diaper change, just a dab, for 10 days. I did that, and also stripped my cloth diapers and included some tto in the wash and we haven't had a prob since.

GL!

97% of the time this is separation trauma, which is totally normal. The foreskin goes through separation throughout childhood adolescents. Over the years it is normal for these symptoms to come and go. Symptoms include: minor swelling, minor redness, itching, pain, sting while urinating, ballooning, spraying, uneven separation, etc. It is different for each boy but the majority of boys will have 1 or more of these symptoms. Please read our thread about separation. You should not be concerned with this unless it gets progressively worse, extremely swollen or very red.

My son had quite a bit of swelling, redness, and pain when he separated. He now balloons.

*If your son has been on antibiotics and is still wearing diapers (especially cloth) he could have a yeast infection. Symptoms of yeast are a peely look and little bumps with defined edges.

That sound like normal separation. It feels strange so he relates the 'feeling' to pain, also normal separation itches. My 7 mo went through some separation a month ago and he kept touching and pulling his parts continuously, it looked just the same: irritated and a bit swollen. I kept doing the baking soda baths with some chamomile tea bags in his tub, it helped so much. In a day or two it was all gone. Let him touch all he wants during baths, it helps with separation

Thanks so much for your help...I'll keep an eye on it...

BTW...how does baking soda help? What is its function?

It soothes and neutralizes PH. It is just very gentle My son touches his parts a lot when he is in the infant tub, I just put lots of bs in his parts while he reaches down there, so basically HE is the one cleaning his own parts works like a charm.

Since he's new to underwear, it might just be his pants rubbing him and chaffing. The diaper would have provided a lot of padding between his penis and the seams and fly of his pants, but the underwear is just a single layer or two of cotton. DS's penis even occasionally comes out the side of his underwear (they don't make it small enough that for DS so it's a bit baggy) so it has nothing between the tip and his pant (unless I notice and have him stic it back in before pulling up his pants.)
