my kissaluvs leak

This is my first time to cd a nb. My dd is 3 weeks old and she is skinny (she was just 6lbs6oz at birth) I'm using kissaluvs fitteds, thirsty's fitteds, and pf's. So far, I'm really frustrated. I have to change her clothes so many times becasue she leaks! I'm using proraps covers (which I do not like one bit - she seems to leak more if she is wearing that one) and thirsty's covers (these do better, but she still leaks). She tends to leak the most with the kissaluvs. I don't understand it, I really make sure the gussets cover the entire diaper. Do I have a lo that just pees a lot? Anyone gone through this or have suggestions? I'm seriously considering going to sposies temporarily because I'm sick of changing and washing clothes so often, especially through the night. I have to say, too, I'm really surprised about this. Over and over I've read on here moms sing the praises of the kissaluvs. Is it just me? Any help appreciated.

Do the covers gape at the legs or back? How often are you changing? Do the dipes leak at the legs or back?

We used KL 0s on DS as a newborn and didn't really have any problems with them... are they snug enough around the legs? Also, I found that DS leaked sometimes because the wetness got from the fitted into the fabric piping on the leg gussets and that leaked, if that made any sense. You may just have a super pee-r... have you tried a doubler?

I never had this problem. I used Kissaluvs 0s and if I wanted a doubler I used the "washcloths" I got as a special promotion from Kissaluvs at the time I ordered them (same material as the diapers) and folded them in half as doublers. I used Mother-Ease snap covers, which I have always liked because they have (adjustable) snap closures at the legs in addition to the waist. I have always had leakage problems with wraps and gave up on them eventually.

Did you wash your Kissaluvs in anything weird? Use fabric softener on them? Did you buy them used, maybe the person before you did something or they're just old and have kind of lost their absorbency? (That happened to my Mother-Ease diapers after 3 kids, they became so thin they leaked like crazy.)

HTH!

PP have some good suggestions. What is she wearing? Sometimes onesies can wick moisture and create leaks.

How often are you changing? Is the dipe soaked when you go to change it, or not soaked but leaks anyway? I second the doubler suggestion too.

My 3rd child was just a heavy wetter and had to be changed every hour for the first month, no matter what diaper she was wearing.

What are you washing them in?

The kissaluvs I am using are from a friend, so I'm not sure what was done to them before I got them. but, I think they were barely used. I wash in Mountain Green detergent. DD is wearing only an undershirt and a nb gown, then swaddled in a blanket. The leaks are the worst at night, when she is sleeping 2-3 hours, or even a little longer sometime. (last night she slept 4 hours, woohoo!!!) And the diaper is soaked. I haven't tried a doubler, mostly because she is so tiny still and already looks so bulky with just the diaper and the cover. I'm not sure what the solution is. I really don't want to buy much more (I'm very budget conscience). Thanks for everyone's advice, I really appreciate it. Funny thing is we actually will be in sposies now for a few days, as my washer needs repair and the part won't be here til Wednesday. Go figure. I think I might just have a heavy wetter!! I didn't realize nb's were capable of that!!!

The problem here is that the diaper is getting too soaked. Kissaluvs are great, but not the most absorbent. You're also not using the greatest covers, so that's adding to the problem. Use a doubler or two with your Kissaluvs and put a wool cover over it (try Aristocrats or Disnea, you can find them at http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/). Make sure you lanolize the cover before using.

Or, try a different diaper. Stuff the heck out of a pocket with some microfiber or hemp inserts, or get a super absorbent fitted (goodmama, under the nile, sos diapers are a few of the thick ones, just off the top of my head).

Oh heavens yes! I think my dd was channeling an extra bladder from another dimension!

You may try a different cover. We're using Thirsties right now. But the first couple of weeks they leaked because she was so skinny right at first, I couldn't get them tight enough around the legs. So, we just used newborn size Bummis. They fit her great (although she outgrew them very quickly) and now that she's grown some, the Thirsties aren't leaking. We were able to get by with just two Bummis until the Thirsties fit her better.

I second (or third or fourth...) the doubler too. We use some Kissaluvs (mostly prefolds) and they do soak through a lot easier than the prefolds. In fact, I put one on her yesterday and she peed just a little before I could get the cover on. With a prefold, it doesn't usually soak through when she pees like that, but the Kissaluvs diaper soaked through immediately.

Who knows, maybe this'll be a non-issue by the time your washer gets fixed. They grow so fast!

I had this problem when I CD'ed my babe as a newborn. I had to change him constantly, and he still leaked. I also had KL's.

It actually resulted in me quitting CD'ing. When I started aagin at 15 months, we had zero leaking problems. I think the diapers must have beena really bad fit for him, but as a new mom I didn't know enough to realize- I just thought all CD's leaked.

It so interesting for me to hear that others have had their Kissaluvs leak, and to hear they aren't that absorbent. Leading up to having this baby, I thought the Kissaluvs 0's were the end all and be all of CD's for a nb. I'm so glad I didn't spend a bundle on them, or I would be upset for sure. I think I am going to try to use the pf's at night and see how they do, because they don't leak during the day. I have been using the kissaluvs at night due to convience but it certainly isn't convienent to change clothes every diaper change! Thanks for the input everyone!

Kissaluvs are awful for my nb too. the only thing he's not leaking is fuzzibunz xs with a microfiber insert.

I think the love with Kissaluvs is that they contain the EBF Poop entriely almost every single time.

They do wet through quickly though, which I admit disappointed me as well, when I used them, but I just changed him more. The only n/b diaper I found that both contained the poop and let him pee more than once was the swaddlebees Organic Cotton Velour, matched with a wool soaker at night and it was great for a few hours.

Yeah I agree, Kissaluvs are not the most absorbant (wasn't an issue for me b/c I didn't have heavy wetters) but the POOP doesn't leak. At least it didn't for me.

I don't know anything about those dipes, but I do know that covers can make a huge difference. We used the motherease airflow (with snaps) and those things are -splosion/leak proof! Love 'em. I want to try some wool with our new little one, but otherwise we'll be using motherease. Hope you figure it out. (And we had soooooo many poo-splosions in sposies that I had to switch to full time cloth!)
