Ebola Vaccine Used - Page 2

Rabies virus.

Of course there is more to the story than an almost perfect fatality rate. Vaccination of dogs has played a big role in controlling the disease in the US, but rabies kills > 55,000 people per year, mostly in Asia and Africa, according to WHO. Ebola has only killed 1200 people since its discovery in 1976.

I once watched a video of a man dying of rabies as part of my training. I wouldn't wish that death on my worst enemy. That's one vaccine I'm glad we have available.

I would imagine the ebola vaccine could work, even post-exposure - afterall we give rabies vaccine post-exposure too (my DH had to get it as a child, sounds like an awful ordeal, IMO!!!). The Hot Zone was definetly a disturbing and scary book... Lab 257 is along the same lines, but about the USDA facility up by new jersey on plum island, and the likely source of Lyme Disease (yes, we, the US government, almost certainly created lyme disease. Makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy, don't it??)

I guess it depends on the type of vaccine. The ebola vaccine, and I would imagine the rabies vaccine, works by stimulating a quick immune response to the disease before it has a chance to take hold - or am I wrong? This is what I understood from the article I read.
I didn't realize rabies was so deadly...
