Tell me about whooping cough

We had 2 mos and 4 mos shots and then stopped. My now 21 mos old is really healthy and has had 2 colds in his life so far.

A co-worker is off sick with whooping cough. I'm not alarmed but I'm curious. If we do get whooping cough, what should I know that I might not already know?

I get that the cough is really persistent, really annoying etc., but what about whooping cough used to kill people? I don't get what the big deal is besides the fact that it is annoying and wee infants have a hard time catching the breath which can be severe.

I found this article. It has some pretty good info, and isn't to vax heavy. Apparently for children under 2 the risk is higher for complications and death. Deaths account for 1% of cases. Apparently the narrowing of the airways causes lack of oxygen for the LO and they can turn blue. This can result in brain damage or death in rare cases. Pneumonia and severe weight loss are listed as factors. Any secondary infection and malnutrition would cause big problems during WC I would think, because the body is already depleted. But 1% is a very small number, you have to remember. Most adults and babies alike make it through. And to be honest your child probably has some immunity from the first 2 shots. So many shots are given to cover people who didn't get full "immunity" from the first or second dose.
