blocking?

I don't block. I just don't. But apparently I need to learn how to do this vital knitting skill. My half blind grandma even told me that my sweater was absolutely beautiful- but still needed to be blocked. I did block my alpaca shawl- but that was just a triangle. How do you go about blocking a sweater? I should have probably done it before I sewed it together right? Oh well too late for that now. Also- I was kind of under the impression that you could only block wool- but maybe not? It was a silk and linen blend yarn for the sweater - does that block also?
