LTK pilot hat

I really love this pattern, but the toddler size is now too small on my one year old, and the child size is waaayyyyy big.

I wondered about possibly knitting down a size for needles, or maybe even using a dk weight yarn - anyone tried this?

THis is my all time fave hat - and this is my last baby. I want to keep putting it on until she won't anymore I love it so much. I'm super bummed that i didn't learn to knit until my 4th child because I think of all the years my babies could have been wearing this hat! That's how much I love it

So what do you think? Ideas? If I was going to use DK I had O-wool balance in mind - tho I think I only have one skein of each color, so I'd also be wondering whether people think that one skein would be enough. I just made the child size pilot hat and hat to break into a second 5o gram skein before I was thru - didn't use a huge amount, but I haven't made the ties yet either - I suppose I could use a different color for the ties actually.

I'm going to try unless someone tells me it for sure won't work

Any thoughts at all would be much appreciated.....

what is small on the toddler size? is it too short, or are the sides not long enough to cover the ears? If it's too short, but fits well otherwise, you can add length in the straight section after the increases Otherwise, I think using a dk and following the next size would work well, also.

It's too short in the back - it's creeping up the back of her head - fits perfectly from the front and covers the ears fine. I'll try it Actually I might try it with the DK too Should I use the same size needle - or a smaller with the DK?

Thanks

go down 2 needle sizes with the dk otherwise you'll get a fabric that is too flimsy and loks "holey"

Perfect - that's what I thought - thanks

Well I did it - I used the child size with o-wool balance and I actually went down 3 sizes as i tend to knit fairly loose.

It's better than the other one I made in child size, but not by much - I think I'll try the other idea you had and use the toddler size but extend the length.
