4 Days of No spending.. not too bad for a beginner.. right
post #214 of 424

Late Beginner!

Hello!

I just became a member of Mothering so I could accept this challenge.

So, first I'll introduce myself:
a. Who I am
My name is Mary. I'm a WAHM to 2 boys (4 1/2 and 1 1/2 yo) and wife to a tech-savvy DH. I sell Japanese stationery and Sublime Stitching patterns online and at craft fairs. I also design and sell my own stationery. My interests are illustration, music, knitting, sewing, vermicomposting, homeschooling, and a whole lot of other things that escape my mind at the moment.

b. Where I am going (my financial goals)
I like to live as cheaply as possible, but my DH and I have discovered that it's a lot easier to spend money on things as a couple than as an individual, so we're trying to curb that habit. A lot of our money just vanishes because we buy each other little treats or get the kids little snacks while we're out and about when really that $5 or $10 over a 30 day period really adds up.

So I guess my financial goal is to hold on to money more so that we can afford a small bit of land and a few animals.

c. How I plan to get there
Well, I'm expanding my store a bit so that when we DO move out of the city, we have a little business already started to support us when we move away. And by saving money, I'm also saving the time it takes to spend that money and will develop some more self-sustaining habits if I use that extra time to teach myself new skills.

Phew! That's a lot of info!

So, here, today, I am starting my No-Spend Challenge and here's my progress:
4/12 spent $50 groceries ($13 meat, $12 bread, $4 lunch extras, $10 milk, $8 tea, & $3 flour) + a $1 mug + $6 vegan Easter candy (kid's allergic to milk)

So, a kind of successful day. I usually spend $100 when I go to the store, because I see all kinds of stuff that I might need and try to stock up each time. But this time, I stuck to the list and saved about $50!

I don't think I'll have as much to spend tomorrow. We're stocked for food now and won't have to buy more until Tuesday.

Cheers,
Mary

We went a little overboard Easter and the grocery budget is blown for the month ... but I've decide to let it go, go on, and start over again on the 15th when we get paid. I probably wasn't being too realistic about the amound of money I set given the fact that we hosted dinner (which ended up being for 17, hence my last minute panic/overspending!)

I had an unplanned diaper stash spend on Saturday morning, but I'm okay with that because I think I will now have enough diapers to go 2 to 3 days between washing depending on how Max is doing w/ potty learning (both my youngest are in prefolds w/ wool covers ... I knit their covers, but we only ad 18 prefolds w/ two kids so I'm doing diaper laundry every day) That should cut our water bill and electric bill down a bit, but even if it doesn't cut it down by much it will improve my quality of living to not being washing dirty dipes every day

Here's my hopes for the week: a small grocery run, NO fast food, stay away from my favorite online shops for yarn, toys, and homeschooling supplies!

Our goals for APRIL!!!
We would like to pay off our Discover Card (the portion that is accruing interest)
Pay extra on CAR S to hopefully pay it off by 9/09.
Add to savings

WOW... this was an expensive weekend. But, we were able to get 4 huge chickens and we obviously are not going to eat them all this week, or even this month. I have started a special diet to help my stomach (SCD see the healing the gut tribe) and now I eat A LOT of produce (not complaining). It is helping so I am not complaining I will probably need to adjust our food budget again until the farmers markets start up and our garden starts producing.
