Sewing machine recs for beginner

Thread Starter
Hi,
Wondering what sewing machines wise people would recommend for a beginner - preferably around or less than $100. Something that would last is more important than tons of doo-dads I'll never use. Enough stitches to allow me to progress and see if I stick with the sewing thing.

What did you start out with?

Thanks

I am not at all a sewing expert. I sew curtains, a few clothes, mend lots of clothes, and can follow a pattern. I have a Kenmore and I've been very happy with it. I think I spent about $200 on it four or five years ago. I know that sears has cheaper models than what I got, like this one.

For that price range, try for a Kenmore or a Janome. Kenmores are made by Janome, and they are solid machines. I have a Kenmore 19606 that I found on CL and it's fabulous. Try to find one with a drop-in bobbin.

good luck!
