Cotton Batting for inner layers

If you have used cotton batting in making your own diapers, did you have to prewash it several times to make it absorbent? I am a quilter and I have a large stash of cotton batting scraps which I was hoping to use in making some cloth diapers, but I took a piece into the bathroom and poured water on it and it beaded up and rolled off. I am hoping that this is because I need to wash it a few times first (just like you have to with DSQ prefolds to get them soft and absorbent). Anyone with experience in this area?

I also read a previous post where someone recommended that the inner liner of the diaper be 2 layers cotton batting, and then a 3rd layer of something like terry. They said that cotton batting absorbs quickly, but doesn't hold the moisture, so something thicker like terry as a third layer supposedly works well. Anyone else have any suggestions about layering when using cotton batting?

Thanks!
