How do kids learn to read? (AKA Teaching toddler to read)

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this but figured you wise mamas would have some ideas.

I am looking for resources and materials for teaching a toddler to recognize letters and learn to read. DD is two and a bit (turned two in November) and loves to read books with us and by herself. She's recognizing some letters but doesn't seem to understand that they "stand" for something (i.e. sees a picture of an alligator in a book and when I ask her what "A" is for, she says "crocodile", which isn't incorrect based on the picture, but she doesn't understand the "letters are sounds" idea).

Basically, I'm curious about how kids learn to read, at what age, whether this is too early to be introducing concepts like letter sounds to her, and how the whole process works. Are there good books on the subject? Do you introduce capital letters first and then non-capitals? Are there actual formal lessons, or do you just let the child learn on their own eventually? How does that happen?

Any input would be great! (I'm also going to post this elsewhere).
Thanks!

Afraid I can't help you with your question, but had a funny story that reminds me of your DD's alligator/crocodile confusion. Mom was homeschooling me when I was about five, and had flashcards. She held up one of an antlered critter driving a car, and I knew that -- whatever it was -- it was supposed to start with the letter 'C.' My exasperated answer? Cantelope (antelope... starting with a 'c' ).

I only noticed that it looked somewhat cow-like after the fact.
