3 Questions...correct me if I am wrong

1. A friends 6 mon. old recently "contracted" pertussus. And we got 2 emails shouting the saving grace that their dd was vaccinated and this made her handle the sickness better...yada...yada... However, if my calculations are right, she got her most recent vacc. a week and a half before getting sick... Am I right in thinking that the vaccination actually made her sick?

2. My ds is 2 and we have typically started a delayed and modified vaccination schedule then (my dd is vaxed for Dtap, Hib and prevnar and we may do the MMR later). However, I am having second thoughts because he is hightly allergic to eggs and wheat and moderately allergic to dairy. What is know about the link to vaccine reactions and food reactions? Are we right in just skipping it all together with him?

3. Also, if we have our other kids delayed vaxed are we bringing the live virus into our home for our un-vaxed kids to contract? Pre the above question???

Ugh...this never gets any easier...

1. I am not sure that the vaccine bacteria is life and can spread. But for sure it weakened the immune system of the child. (I hope she gives the child lots of SA)

2. The allergies could have come from the vaccine. Vaccines mess with the immune system. We don't vaccinate at all, so imo you really should not continue to vaccinate.

3. There are only a few vaccines with "live" virus that can spread. And they do spread, yes.

Here is a site with "vaccine shedding" -

1. Pertussis isn't a live vaccine, so she couldn't have contracted it from the vaccine.

2. If it were my child I would diligently research the vaccine ingredients I was considering. Some vaccines have milk proteins I believe, others use egg. It is possible that a reaction could happen if the child is allergic to an ingredient, or an allergy may be made worse from exposure, in my understanding. My children have no none allergies though, so I haven't personally looked closely at this.

3. Only certain vaxes are live. Shouldn't be a problem for most with basic hygiene being followed, even in the event it did shed. The only ones I would worry about shedding would be the chickenpox (under certain circumstances) and the live flumist.

I would also be concerned about Rotovirus shedding (although that is only given to babies under 1 year).

For pertussis, my understanding is that the vaccination CAN help the WC to be milder, in some cases. This is one reason you hear of so many misdiagnoses, when people actually do have pertussis but are told by docs that they do not. But yes, the vaccine could have made her immune system lower for a period of time while her body was dealing with the vax, making her more susceptible.

Here is a list of ingredients from the CDC although I believe it is not a comprehensive list and may only be the main ingredients:

Yeah rotavirus is a nasty one too. I always forget that one. I was never even asked if I wanted it with any of my three kids.

1. I don't think the vax actually caused the pertussis. I find it amusing that the parents praised the vax. Wait a second, your child got a disease that vax was supposed to protect, and your thanking the vax for her getting through it?!?! Oh my.

2. DTaP contains milk protiens I believe. I personally wouldn't vax a child that already had allergies.

3. MMR, CP, rotavirus and flumist are live viruses that shed. A vaxed child could bring it home to unvaxed.

I agree with the above points but wanted to add that pertussis can take several weeks before symptoms show so I believe it would have been possible that the baby had it before the vax too. The vaxes might have actually lowered he immune system enough to where she couldn't fight it off. Not every 6 month old that comes into contact with it will get it. My dd was exposed to it around that age and didn't get it (I got the major pertussis symptoms when dd was 7 months).
