I keep hearing how Twitter helps small businesses. Um, how? LOL I don't really like Twitter and can't see how it could help anything so maybe I just have a blockage of some sort on that. Any ideas?

It just brings additional traffic to your site, but you have to update pretty often. I have no idea how people are finding me on Twitter, but they are. Facebook has been good too...I started a page there for my business. I make sure to put on my website, and on contact emails, that I can be found at both places.

Funny, I just posted about this in another MDC forum.
For your purposes, you should define who your target market is for your goods. I'm not sure what you sell, but say, for example, that you make diapers. Your target market would be crunchy moms, maybe. Or if you make general baby products, your target market could be just moms. So you could go to http://www.twellow.com/ and do a search for "mama" or "mom" or "crunchy mama"...you get the picture. And take a few minutes each day to add a few of those people. They'll probably follow you back. I'd also try to do a search for "etsy" and add others who are selling on etsy. See whether they are using twitter effectively and copy what they're doing.
You can use twitter to 1) let people get to know you, 2) create buzz around a new product you are coming out with, 3) get people to go to your blog or etsy site.
Letting people get to know you: These days, people would rather buy from someone they know, like, and trust. Mamas want to buy from other mamas. I'd do a few tweets per day that tell something about you and/or offer something valuable, say, information on a sale somewhere, or an article about child safety. You get the picture.
Create buzz around a new product: When you're creating something new, you can post with something like, "Designing an awesome new diaper cover that I know you're going to love!" And not just one tweet about it. Then, when it's ready to sell, people are waiting to see it.
Get people to your blog or etsy site: The obvious is when you have a new product to sell, you can let people know about it. The not-so-obvious is getting people to your blog or website, and offering them something of value, that they get after they put in their name and email. So, for someone who makes children's toys, you could have a short report that you put together about the danger of lead in toys, or whatever. Or, maybe a coupon code for your products. Then, once you have their email, you can add them to your email list. I email my list every week with a little newsletter that is personal and gives them resources and offers. This is another way to get people to know, like, and trust you. Maybe when they first saw your site, they liked what you had, but didn't have the money. When they get their paycheck, they'll turn to you because you're keeping in touch. If you want to start doing this, I use https://www.aweber.com/landing.htm to capture leads and send out my weekly email. I think it's $19 a month if your list is under 500.
I also really recommend that when you start following other etsy sellers on twitter, retweet them when they tweet offers or information. Build a rapport with other sellers. Then, when you tweet information, they'll retweet you, and you'll reach all of their followers too.
If you ever have any questions about twitter or social media in general, let me know!
