100%acrylic for soaker?

My mom just gave me a bunch of 100% acrylic as I've started going diaper cover making crazy using wool yarn to crochet (planning on knitting next). I assume that I can only use 100%wool but my mom doesn't know that. I planned to put it aside for another project (in theory). Then I saw someone mention on diaper swappers that they use acrylic when making their covers. Is this possible?

I don't think it would work to be honest. I think it would leak like crazy, maybe someone else has first hand experience.

For a cover just to be cute, yes. For a soaker that will be absorbent, no.

i used acrylic for practicing before using more costly good stuff. i've been suprised at how much the soakers have worked. definetly it cant hold a candle to wool but for a day time baby running around soaker, it has worked fine for me. Also i've used it with longies, do the legs with teh acrylis if i'm really loving the color/pattern and use wool for the diaper area. I get TONS of comments on those. I've also used the acrylics making leggings/legwarmers.

i tried lanolizing one, started as an accident, it did make it slightly more waterproof, not soaking but holding liquid in, better.
Again... doesnt hold a candle to wool, has to be washed more, wont last you thru a night etc BUT if its cheap or free.....it is usable for sure.

It worked ok for us. If you wash it with fabric softener or something to make it repel (you know, the stuff they tell you NOT to use on the diapers so they stay absorbant...) it works a little bit better.

People use fleece, too, (which is also plastic, kwim?) so it's fine. I wouldn't use it on a long trip or anything, though... and I think it needs to be washed more often than a wool soaker.

When I was learning to know I used 100% acrylic to make a pair of longies...and they work great! No leaks, nothing - we wash them in the washer/dryer with the diapers, and they dont stay as soft but I have never had a problem with leaks with them....

Wow, this is pretty surprising! I thought you could only use wool.

Acrylic doesn't breathe, though, and can get really hot and stuffy -- just something to watch out for!

I have one pair of acrylic longies and absolutely hate them. Needless to say they never get used.

I love my acrylic longies and shorties. They work great during the day, I've never had a leak. I have both crochet and knit and both work just as well. They wash up easy in the washer and dryer too. As for breathability, I think it is just fine because knit and crochet have lots of space between stitches, not dense like regular fabric, so breathability should be excellent.
