Easy projects and patterns for a beginner

I'm going to learn how to sew this spring.

And yes, I am going to head out to look for a pattern. The woman who is going to teach me would like me to choose something simple to make as a project at the end.

Are skirts ever simple? I'd like to make a knee-length skirt out of triangles sewn together - one that is bell-shaped when you wear it. I'd also like

I'm going to start with really simple things like baby swaddling blankets, and then we progress to a bag. But do you think a skirt like that would be too hard?

Does anyone have a good online source of patterns?

Thanks!

google the item you want to make along with the word "tutorial" if you're looking for a free how to (e.g. A line skirt tutorial)

Most major fabric stores sell patterns on sale from $0.99 to $1.99 year round so purchasing a pattern isn't a huge initial investment.

And the big three pattern makers (simplicity, mccalls, butterick) all have "easy" pattern lines so you should have no problem finding something to sew.

Ah, I haven't liked wearing skirts for many years, but I am going to try to convince myself that I do.

Thanks for the tips and the book recommendation. Our library seems to have odd sewing books, so it's good to have recommendations.

I'll look up tutorials and cheap patterns too!

I'm a beginner sewer also, and plan on buying the book "Sew Everything Workshop" by Diana Rupp. It got the best reviews and has 10 patterns and instructions for lots of other projects in it, and it's for beginners. I'm also making the "5-minute skirt" on Angry Chicken's blog. This has been a great experience in making my first pattern, learning how to hem a skirt, using fold over elastic, and learning about cutting fabric on the bias. I'm the kind of person that jumps right into things though, and I just do things trial and error. I'm just glad I have my mom, who is an experienced sewer, who will come over and help out when I need her to.

I'm working on two skirts from "Sew What Skirts" myself
