Idea: hunger strike throughout the country.

What if intactivists throughout the country (those who are willing to do so, of course) will join the two guys in their hunger strike (locally). They could sit by their local capitol buildings, or by the largest (in their area) TV companies.

What do you guys think about the idea. If it is happening, I’m in. One thing is for sure, we need to move FAST for those two boys’ sake/wellbeing .

Are you still nursing? I don't really see that as being a viable option for lactating moms.

I am, both of my kids (almost 2.5 yo and almost 4yo). My husband, however, has been wanting to wean them for quite some time now. So when we discussed the issue this past fall, I sort of promised that we will wean toward summer time. So, perhaps, this will be one of those rare situations when it is really worth while winning (and I would feel much better about weaning my kids if this is done due to something that is so important to me).

I think it is a good idea but we need to choose a day and get media attention for it.All you would need to do is not go to a restaurant that day or buy groceries or gas etc.

Who in the world would care about few "nutcases" who decided to not eat out or buy gas/groceries???
I think we need to starve for days right infront of a local administration (just like these two boys) to get ANY serious attention.

As much as I want this barbarism ended, hungers strikes make people look like lunatics and tend not to be effective. And they're dangerous.

I agree.

and no one cares. Hunger strikes only work if the people you are trying to convince have some stake in your health, like prison, hospitals, inpatient care.

Plus a lot of us are mothers, pregnant or lactating, thats dangerous for the children.

Yeah, I support their cause, but won't be participating. I'm lactating and couldn't even think of doing that.

And for something as ingrained in our society as circ you're definitely not going to get beyond "What a bunch of loons!" and maybe even "Somebody please save their children from them"

honestly I have never seen hunger strikes as a lunatic act, dunno that's just me... They do get my attention though, and I always want to know what they are striking about. Too bad I am nursing an 8 mo, if not, I would've participated. I am THAT passionate about this.

oh wait!!!

I could do something about it though!

I could place signs in the name of those boys in front of my local TV station?

I very much agree.

I know I posted this in the other thread, too, but Jeff- if you read this- can you give us an update on how they are doing? They were only on day 1 or whatever when I was there and now I think it has to have been 4 days? are they ok?

Well neither have I but we're trying to touch the mainstream here and to do that we have to do it through the media.

Yep. No one is going to stop circumcision over hunger strikers. It's just drama without a purpose and will probably backfire. I hope those boys don't really intend to follow through with it to the bitter end.

I never said that it'll stop it or make it illegal (this is not going to happen any time soon, obviously). But I do think that it can bring a lot of awareness: if you're asked by journalists why you do that and you explain just how traumatic the procedure is, the sick history of it in North America, the importance of foreskin, about human rights and it gets shown in news, published in papers, lots of people will ask themselves if this is indeed true, go, google and learn the truth about circ. It could be a very good educational move (on a large scale).

hunger strike = everyone thinks you are crazy. I think things like that actually make an issue less significant to those who may be on the fence. No one is going to give a crap about a hunger strike. There are more tactful ways to get a message across!
Nope, I think the journalists will just think that the anti-circ cause is filled with wingnuts. They're going to focus on extremists, not on how anti-circ is becoming mainstream. And people who read about it will consider anti-circs part of a freakshow.

I think it's a seriously bad idea.

Hi, threads intended to discuss "actionable" events would need to be submitted to our Activism forum. It appears we are veering into some generalized namecalling, and that's not the forum's intent here. Our Activism forum was created specifically for calls for action. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation
