So in the process of finding sources for my speech about the AMA/ACOG resolution about homebirth, I've been reading more and more comments from officials within the organizations, reading 'statements of policy', and finding more attempts to kill any choice we might have in our births.
I mean, I knew this was going on before I really started researching it, but I didn't realize it was this blatant--or that it really could become a reality. Did you know that in the past 10 years, only the US Chamber of Commerce has spent more money on lobbyists than the AMA. They spent over $20,000,000 in 2008.
I don't think this kind of thing will get passed before I'm done having kids, but would be so proud if my daughter were to grow up and have a homebirth---and to think that she might not even have that option...
This is just really sad to me, you know?

I know this for a fact because that is exactly what happens here in Maryland. The CPM designation is outright illegal, but we still have a few actively attending HBs. Of course, some of them hold licensure in neighboring states, so they're not totally "illegal" nationwide, but still, they persist. One was even charged a felony (I guess 'practicing medicine without a license') but she also still continues. (I know she didn't go to jail, I think maybe she was just fined, not sure.)
