i never realized fabric was so expensive, im just starting to have to buy it and 8$ a yard is crazy im used to walmart fabric prices im shocked how can you afford fabric and where do you buy it online?

online fabric is typically not cheap unless you're part of a co-op, and even then, they don't match walmart $2/yard.

check out goodwill. Sheets, pillowcases and tablecloths are classic examples of recon material. Sometimes thrift shops even have yardage along with patterns/etc.

sign up for your local shop's mailing list. Joann's, Hancock's, and Hobby Lobby often have great sales and coupons.

ditto pp. i dont pay $8/yard for woven though. also sometimes look around for mamas who are destashing fabric, if you know your game, you will know if its overpriced though for most part, they are priced pretty fair, woven around $4-$5/yard and knits are from $4 - $8/yard..

you will be shocked at how much some of the "hard to find" print cost, i've known mamas who paid up to $50/yard for kids fabric

Jo-Ann's clearance section when it goes 50% off is usually a great time to buy fabric. I've found absolutely lovely cotton knits there for $2 or $3 a yard. I can't afford online prices for fabric either!

I only buy fabric on sale. I usually order online because the fabric over here on sale a lot of time is more expensive than what I can get online for the same thing. Sometimes I get fabric from someone whos getting rid of fabric as well.

I am very fortunate, I live in Dallas & here we have an entire street that is all fabric warehouse outlets. I never spend more than $2/yard. The only problem is that I keep buying cloth, I buy it faster than I have time to sew. The good thing is that I get 60" denim at that price & since I am short, 1 yard will make a pair of jeans for me. That means, including the thread & zipper, new jeans cost me about $2.75! I even do desinger pockets.

I scour the remnant table and marked-down sections of fabric stores, and almost never pay more than $5/yard for anything.

I do this too. I also second the idea of checking out thrift stores. We have one that has bins & bins of fabric, usually less than $1/yd. It's not designer, but it works!
