Help me remove my diaper stink

Ok, so I remember reading a thread awhile back about someone getting stink out of their diapers....they called the diaper company and got good advice? Now I forget what that advice was. Prego brain, ftw!

I bought a whole cloth stash for my 2 and 3 yo after we moved into a house with washer dryer hookups (in our previous place, we didn't have any and laundry was too much of a nightmare to do cloth). Anyway, after a short time the diapers got a horrific ammonia smell once peed in. I couldn't get it out no matter what I did! I thought it was just the smell of pee, but their pee really doesn't stink like that otherwise. I know that for sure now that my oldest is fully PT'd. The smell was so bad I could smell it from a room away through a zipped wetbag.

I was using Biokleen at the time, so I am thinking that was the problem? Build up? I tried: stripping with dish soap (more than once), multiple rinses and washes, baking soda, vinegar (in varying amounts), extra soap, less soap, soap nuts instead of detergent, no detergent at all, Bac-Out in copious amounts...

So...what was that miracle stink removing system someone had? And, what soap should I switch to for my diaper laundry. I was thinking of doing Planet since it's generally recommended and easy to get. I want to avoid needing a detergent I can only get online.

I ended up giving up and putting my kids back in sposies, which pains me on so many levels. It's also hard becuase my husband is not supportive of cloth at all, and he was spoiled by the sposie using year we lived in our old apartment. Anyhow, I really want to get my now almost 3 year old back into cloth. She's starting to potty train and I think it could really help her learn when she has to go. She's very willing to sit on the potty but she doesn't seem to realize when she has to go beforehand.

TIA!

Our ammonia stink was caused by 2 things:

1. not using enough detergent (I know this is opposite of what a lot of people will tell you, but it's true!)
2. hard water

Get a good-rinsing detergent (like Charlie's-- if you order from their site and get $28+ worth of detergent at once, you get free S&H-- and I've also heard good things about Planet) and use the full recommended amount. You don't want to let bacteria OR detergent build-up, which is why you need something water soluble.

And if you have hard water, what's helped us is to add liquid Calgon to our wash routine. It took a couple weeks of use before I started to see improvement, but sure enough we haven't had any yucky ammonia smells since. It's definitely worth the $5 or so the bottle costs!

To fix it:

Soak all diapers in half vinegar/half water (in a bucket).

Then strip your diapers with some Calgon water softener and no detergent. (Wash them over and over on hot until all bubbles are gone.)

Then choose a different detergent: Charlie's, Allens, Mountain Green Baby Free and Clear, Sportwash, Country Save.

For your new routine:

Cold prewash with 1 cup white vinegar - this dissolves the ammonia salts.

Hot wash with approved detergent (yes you have to order them, unless it is hunting season - Walmart will have sportwash in the hunting section - but they are so cheap to order online and last so long and prevent so many problems that it is worth it!) Use the full amount at first and if you have to rinse a bunch, then use a little less next time.

HTH!

I have never been able to find liquid Calgon...where'd you snag it? I've tried hardware stores, virtually every grocery and drugstore as well as target/wal mart...where is this stuff?!?!?!

Ok, I may try some planet and if that doesn't work, Charlie's. Thanks!

The only place locally I could find it was my Super Wal-Mart in the laundry aisle. They definitely had the best price compared to online options, too. I'm surprised you can't find it at a Wal-mart. Hmmm... not sure what to suggest.

Ok, the Wal Mart I looked for it in was a small Wal Mart. We've since moved and we have a Super one here, I'll check there! Thanks!

Whenever I get stink, it's build up.

I strip in small loads with just hot water until all suds are gone.

Okay, nosing in here with a question to help me get rid of stink and rash. I have a TLer, BUT it's in storage so I get to use my mom's FLer for now. Talk about a learning curve as my son's rash gets worse. It's not just the diapers, but that's where it's horrid. So, how does this sound?

Cold rinse
Hot wash with 2 TB powdered Planet and 2 TB liquid Calgon (yes, Super WM)
Double cold rinse
Extra water button on the LG Steam type washer
??? I hope it sounds good, since it's running right now. 3rd wash today.

My parents are in debt because of this thing, and I hate it BC I want to manhandle my laundry myself. I just want my stuff back so I can CD and HB in peace. At least my mom does not use dryer sheets or liquid. Phew!!

Any suggestions? I have Charlie's but have not tried it here yet, as I am just now CDing again since we are not on very hard well water, but moderately hard city water while between houses. I'm letting my 2 yr old run with just a PF while the weather is nice hoping it'll help for now. I think the Planet might agree with him more, but I'm obviously clueless. Suggestions? Hoping we can learn from each others mistakes so we don't have to make them all alone.
