for a major sinus infection so I was wondering even though it says do not breast feed because the medicine is excreted in the breast milk.

Then I was thinking since it was proably more for babies than older kids.

Any opinions on this ?

Typically concentrations are at there highest about 2 hours after taking a med. You may want to time your breastfeeding according to that. Maybe someone can look it up for you in Hales.

Cipro is an L3 in Hale's, moderately safe. I really wouldn't worry too much with a 4 y.o. as long as your son doesn't have any particular antibiotic sensitivity.

Most drugs say don't breastfeed on the packaging insert, it doesn't actually mean it's not safe.

dont know if this applies to you or not, but when i was given a special medication i absolutely refused to take it because i was still bfeeding. and the doc after much heming and hawing found an alternative for me where i didnt have to stop nursing.

not sure if it is an option but i would check with them.

I probably wouldn't hesitate too much with an short term L3 at 4 years of age. Could you find out it's half life and take it when it will be best for your nursing (like if DS doesn't nurse during the night, you could take it right after he nursed to sleep and then you would have a big window).

When I was diagnosed with an infected bug bite/possible Lyme disease, I specifically requested a breastfeeding safe antibiotic, and I got Cipro--I didn't know that it wasn't considered 100% safe; wish the doc had told me that. And I had to take a high dose for 2 full weeks. I did take care to feed both myself and my son (he was a little over a year old at the time) lots of probiotics/yogurt.

For a 4 1/2 year old I personally wouldn't be too concerned, though I would, as other posters have suggested, try to time feedings when the drug is less concentrated. And I would make sure he eats some yogurt.

i have to take cipro from time to time for UTIs. it's never been an issue for me or DD. i've taken it from time to time since she was about 6 months old with no problems. the old recommendations said it wasn't safe for nursing because it's not safe for kids to take themselves. but apparently now even the AAP is saying it is safe for nursing.

HTH!
