Help w longies, one leg less stitches..

I was using the sheepy pants pattern, and I have no idea how this happened bc I counted several times throughout, but I finished the first leg and it looked wonderful, went onto the second leg and seriously.less.stitches. Is there any way to overcome this I find it hard to swallow after all that hard work and sweat I will have to trash the whole thing. I tried to google some info., but couldnt come up with anything. TIA!

I'm a newbie knitter and just did the same thing. I was halfway through the second leg when I realized the gauge changed drastically from the first. I got more comfortable knitting and my stitches loosened up. What I did was started the second leg over with a smaller needle size than I used on the first. The gauge didn't match up perfectly, so I was still off several rows, but I just made up for that when seaming by sewing two bars to one a few times. I still have the other half a leg closeted because I'll probably pick it back up and make a second pair some day. I just happen to have about a dozen skeins of that yarn anyway. They still turned out looking good. Most people wouldn't notice any mistakes, a seasoned knitter who was looking, I'm sure would though, lol. You didn't say how far into the second leg you are or if its finished, or if you have extra of that yarn, so I don't know if my situation will help yours at all. Here's hoping it turns out alright for you too.

OK, let's go with the specific numbers. How many less stitches? Can you post a picture? (I've never knitted the sheepy pants pattern, so I don't know what the gusset looks like...)
There are various ways of cheating, with grafting and creating stitches and all sorts, but without more information I can't talk you through any of them. I will say, though, that how you fix this depends on why you are knitting in the first place: process, or product? It's worth taking the time to get it right.

eta: found the pattern. You need your gusset to line up perfectly on both sides. If you don't, IMO you have no option but to frog.

Thanks. Crap. They were really uneven, for example, the first leg had like 40stitches and the crazy second one had 19. I was knitting for my baby on the way. I guess I will just start over . Lesson learned, I guess.

No, don't start over. You said lesson learned, right? Run a lifeline through your work just above the top of the legs (above the gusset if that's wonky too), frog back to that point, put your needle back in and off you go again...

eta: let me know if you need a hand with this.

I'd venture to guess that somewhere along the way, you started to follow directions for a different size, so your work wasn't split evenly - you can rip back like Helen said and then be sure that you're following the right size (I usually like to make a working photocopy, and highlight the numbers for the size i'm working)

Thanks for all the advice. I havent decided what I'm going to do for sure yet, and I havent had time again to sit down and assess or work on them. I think I will end up undoing them and seeing where I went wrong.
