Why should it be illegal for unvaxed kids to attend public school? - Page 3

I'm not trying to argue about anything with you. I'm simply trying to understand your reasoning. I can understand you doing what you have to do to protect A, just as I do with Owen.

Whether or not schools should have your child's health information has nothing to do with HIPAA. HIPAA was implemented so that people who work in health care do not abuse the information available to them. The purpose of HIPAA is for the patient to know who has accessed their information.

Schools asking for vaccination records is kind of like your boss requiring a sick note if you've taken out of work. It's just documentation, not details. And since you would be the one providing the records, you would be fully aware that the schools had them.

Quite frankly, HIPAA did much more than just that, but that is not for this discussion.

I am talking about the other parents at the school knowing a child's vaccine status: my child's vaccination status is none of anyone's business. The school really needs to know my child's vaccination status in the event of an outbreak, at which point in time, my child would need to be excluded from school, as required by law.

I know that the schools know not only about my child's vaccine status, but other health issues as well, and I have a separate problem with that.

Quite frankly, I am not the one who introduced HIPAA to the discussion.

Personally, I feel that if my kids are going to be in someone else's care for a good part of the year, the responsible parties should know if my kids have health issues.

Maybe your kid goes to a really tiny school, but I can't imagine school personnel trying to verify vax records for hundreds or thousands of children in the event of an outbreak. That sounds like a very inefficient way to deal with things. My high school had over 1,600 teens in attendance.

The biggest problem with the arguments being made is that they are inaccurately assuming that unvaxed kids are the ones harboring disease. The whole argument is flawed when the target is the unvaxed and not the sick. Just because someone is unvaxed doesn't mean they will get a "VPD", and that is the primary misinformation being assumed here. My own daughter has never gotten one even when she was exposed and is now 21 years old.

One and one half years ago, Dr. Jay Gordon was asked to respond to an article in the Los Angeles Times.

Unvaccinated children do not pose a threat to vaccinated children or their families.

We all have a responsibility to keep each other’s children safe. Choosing to not vaccinate or choosing an alternative vaccine schedule could be considered a rift in that contract. Medically, scientifically and statistically speaking, it is not.

He was my paediatrician thirty years ago.

I don't think it should be illegal but I think it is important to know if there are unvaccinated kids in the school.

I'm not sure if this is common, but where we live there is actually a site that has vaccine rates/exemption rates for every elementary school: http://www.baycitizen.org/local/counties/immunizations/

Just in case anyone is interested....
