Using only wool...and flats?

Thread Starter
With ds, we didn't cd from the start... I think he was around 10 months? when we started. I used flats and prefolds, with bummis sww and mother-ease air flows.
This time I want to switch to wool covers, but I'm wondering how they would work with flats (I reaaally like flats).
Also, ds's flats were flannel, I couldn't snappi them. I pinned, but I'm a little leary of pinning on a nb - plus dh never got the hang of it. If I got birdseye flats, would they be 'snappiable' (partic. in origami fold)?
Last question:
how many wool wraps, bare minimum? Ds was tiny (just over 5 lbs) so I def can't skip newborn sizes, but we're on a limited buget.
TIA!

I used wool at night (Disana and LANA soakers) with flats and loved the combo. Can't really give you much feedback on using only wool, but I don't think it would be a problem. Birdseye is definitely snappi-able. I used to snappi flats on using the origami fold with DS. I use pins now on both DS and DD. Pinning on a newborn takes a bit of practice but once you get the hang of it it's easy. I hear you on your DH though. I think I'm the only one who changes diapers around here who gets the dipe on nice and snug.

I use Sugar Peas wool covers (and I use the fleece ones too) and I LOVE them. I don't use flats but I use prefolds, so that's similar and then we use fitteds sometimes too. Now that I think about it I also had a wool soaker a while back when the baby was a nb and that worked great too. I'd say YES! Wool works great.

I am basically using wool most of the times (I do have 2 NB nylon pull-ups and 1 Prowrap) I made all my wool covers so I had some back up just incase I didn't do to well w/ sewing. Anyways I like the wool I can reuse them more (once no poop got on them) than w/ the other covers. I heard 4 wool covers should be good, but you can get some other cheap covers just in case. Right now I am rotating between 2 wool wrap covers, 2 pull-up bum-type covers(made them with Katrina Quick sew soaker patter) and the 2 nylon covers.

I also use flats(the birdseye ones), I mostly snappi them, but I also have pins. I have very few prefolds(maybe like 5 from DS diapering days). I do plan on making some fitteds sometime just for the fun of it.

So far the wool wraps are quicker to get on than the pull-up wool covers, but I like that the pull-up wool covers have leg cuffs.

It will probably work fine but for that runny nb poop stage, just be sure that you're either a master at getting the flat on tight enough, or that you have enough covers to get through one of those days where he blows out of virtually every diaper onto the wool covers that take a day to dry after being washed I'd say at least 7 covers, preferably 10. I like a lot of covers at that stage though, for this reason.

Sugar Peas, Disana, and Aristocrats are my favorites.

i don't know about flats, because i'm mostly using prefolds, but as far as how many wool wraps:
i have 2 cya wool wraps and 2 aristocrats pull-ons. i mostly rotate the cya's in the daytime (they seem to be a little more trim) and use my aristocrats at night. i think that i could probably be happy with just one aristocrat now that baby pretty much sleeps through the night, but i happen to have 2 because somebody gave them to me. i also have 2 bummis covers for back-up (days when the wool keeps getting pooped on)
i've got a friend who did wool covers with just 2 and just kept rotating them, but i think you'd definitly need a backup for incase one was drying- they do take a while to dry.
since you said you're on a limited budget, i'll mention that i got the cya covers for only 12$ each from the "sweater to wool wrap service". if you have any old sweaters or can get some cheap at a thrift shop, its really affordable. they do seem to run big, though. even the newborn size was a little big around the legs on my 7lb newborn for a while.
