Actually, I think that is outside the rules, if you do it on purpose.

A great solution, though, is to have lots of kids, so they interrupt you before that point. Since there was no intent, no culpability, but still sex or foreplay without pregnancy

Sure, that's a good thing, when it works. I read a long online NFP discussion between Catholic parents a while back, in which there were many mentions of this effect but also at least as many mentions of NFP as a cause of tension, arguments, blaming one another for pregnancies, and having to refrain from all affection and flirtation one week out of four to avoid tempting each other. Practicing NFP with total abstinence during fertile times can be very, very difficult, depending on the people involved. It sounds to me (looking at it from the outside) as if the church could do more to help couples learn techniques for relating and coping effectively, rather than assume that these abilities just come about naturally through practicing NFP.
I think there are programs to this effect, but I don't know how common they are. I know an RC friend of mine who is getting married this summer was mentioning that she thought there were many inadequacies in the marriage prep they had to do.

I don't know about all dioceses, but in mine, in addition to the NFP classes, there is a marriage communication retreat for every stage of marriage: before the wedding, newlywed, been married for a while, thinking about separating, reconciliation, and coping classes for permanent separation or widowhood.

I'm not aware of the Church ever suggesting abstinence from marital sex. As far as I know, the only Friday abstinence it recommends is abstinence from meat.

The Orthodox church practices abstinence from all animal foods and from sex on Wednesdays and Fridays. The RC church changed the Wednesday fasting rule around 1800, but I am not sure when or if they advised sexual abstinence on those days.

This used to be a part of all fasting - fasting included abstinence from sex, rich food, alcohol.
