Fantastic well child visit today!

So my 20MO had her 18 month check up today (woops...a little late). We have only been to this pediatrician once at her 12 month appointment and my DD has never been vaccinated. So of course, I do all my research and get prepared to at least discuss vaccinations. By the way, we want to do well child visits so that we can create a relationship with a pediatrician. Plus, it's good to make sure she's on track for development, etc. Who knows - maybe I'd miss something.

Anyway, she's asking all kinds of questions. When I mentioned DD sleeps with us sometimes, she didn't say anything at all, she asked if I was still breastfeeding and was thrilled that we are. Anyway, everything I said that I would think most pediatricians would be unsure of, she was totally fine with. So I'm feeling pretty good.

Then she says "so I see your daughter hasn't had any vaccinations yet." And I just said "no, we're going to wait until later." She said "oh, ok. Do you have any questions?" I said no, and that was that! She moved on to the next question.

Woohoo! I think I've finally found a pediatrician!

I had a similar experience at my ds's 9 month visit with a new ped. Its such a relief isn't it?

Great! I am happy for you. :

On the other hand, isn't that the way it should be? Why are we glad when a ped agrees with the care we give to our own offspring? Something is terrible wrong here. We have been taught to fear doctors.

Totally agree that this is how it *should* be, Gitti. I especially loved that she asked if I had any questions. She sounded totally open to discussing it with me in a non-judgmental way.

That said, it's totally not how it is around here anyway. Most doctors will kick you out of the practice if you don't show proof that you at least have a schedule you're planning to follow. As I mentioned, I do really want to have a relationship with a pediatrician and I really liked this one at our first visit. I was really afraid they would have a policy and kick me out and I'd be back to the drawing board for finding a ped I liked. Now I just have to find an OB who isn't induction-happy... hmm...
