Absolute favorite diaper cover pattern? Longies, shorties, soakers, whatever...

I have a pile of wool to make soakers/longies/shorties out of, and am just wondering what your absolute all-time favorite pattern has been. Doesn't matter knit or crochet, I do both. I already have 2 LTK patterns (ribby wrap and hybrid rib), and just wondering what else would be good to have. I still have about 5 months to make the stuff, but I'm itching to get started.

And while I'm at it, what size should I be making? I've already made 2 Smalls (one day, one night), how many more of those should I plan on needing before moving on to making Mediums? Based on my and DH's birth weights, I don't expect this bean will be any smaller than 8lbs, so I'm not going to make any NB sizes.

I'm sure you'll get lots of responses - can't really help with this question. Looking to knit some myself! Just wanted to throw in that even a baby on or under 8 lbs will grow out of a NB size very quickly!! Ravelry has lots of patterns with comments/reviews. But this is a good place to ask! I want to see what these gals have to say, too!

subbing as I have been trying to answer the same questions myself. I am making newborn sizes, dh and I were both under 8 pounds at birth, and I'm a pretty little mama. I know they'll likely not fit for long, but I think I'd rather have something that fits properly in the beginning, to hopefully avoid messes from on overlarge cover. And they can always be used for the next babe.

The only pattern I've tried so far is the LTK hybrid rib. I can't weigh in on how functional the soaker is, but I did like the pattern, and it seems to have features that free patterns don't have. (Leg gussets, short row bum shaping)

I made a few of these while I was prego, but the leg holes came out too small. Pretty sure I made them right, but my ds might have come out a little chubby too. A great learning experience, nonetheless.

I like the curly purly soaker. For longies and shorties, I really like the LTK picky pants.

:

As many other patterns I've tried these are the two that I go back to again & again.

While pregnant I knit a bunch of the LTK hybrid soakers in the 2 smaller sizes, the nb and small, they fit my 8 pound babe well until about 3 months.....a good looking trim soaker.

Knit some mediums and larges now! I was knitting them while my newborn slept (and I could bear to lay him down )

The LTK original soaker is nice and has more growing room in my experience.
You can't go wrong with anything from LTK!

I loved the picky pants pattern. It has so many options! I made a couple of soakers for friends' babies and it was a lot of fun, too.

I also agree the Curly Purly Pattern is great. I also really like Munchkin Rumps Soaker . And then for longies and shorties I love the perfections pants pattern. I also thought I would say that I made Sheepy Sacks for night time and it has made those night changes so easy.

As far as how many you need I have 4 small soakers and then 2 sheepy sacks and that is working out great for us so far.

I'm about to knit up some Sheepy Pants for a friend and we've been looking at yarn for a while. She really wants something soft that won't pill too much. Anyone have some suggestions? I debated on whether to do Sheepy Pants or Picky Pants and ended up with the former after reading comments here on both. Maybe I should try them both! A lot of people in this thread seemed to love the LTK patterns. Hmmm.

nak . . . I really like the sheepy pants pattern. I knit both for this babe and prefer the look of the sheepy pants although he hasn't worn his PP yet. I made them with the curly purly waistband and this has worked great.

my baby was 7lb 13 oz and 19.5" long. A tiny surprise after his 9lb 21" sister. An inseam of 5.5" is perfect for us.

if knitting for a newborn, pilling won't be much of a problem because they don't move enough to create friction on the yarn.

otherwise, I like cestari superfine merino. soft like cotton, but sturdy with a low pill factor.

as for soakers, i keep coming back to the warm heart woolie pattern.

Oh, which WHW soaker did you like, the plain wrap? Thanks!

I've knit both, but only used the plain, or trim soaker, for this baby. This, too, is a good fit and easy to modify. I put ribbing in the seat for a size small which I haven't used yet. I tried to make it like the Vanilla soaker on Ravelry. I loved the wrap I did for a friend, but, I couldn't find aplix, so, it didn't get much use. I don't think I got the velcro on well enough for her. If I ever do it again, I'll make button holes!

I really like the Sheepy Pants pattern, it is one of the few patterns out there that I'm more than willing to knit more than once. I've not tried the LTK pattern. I should put out the disclaimer that I'm a licensed Sheepy Knitter. However, I got licensed because I really love the pattern, if that helps

As for quantity, I'd do 4 nb, 4 or 5 smalls and more med and large, since they tend to stay in those sizes longest.

Don't mean to highjack the thread but...

Are any of the patterns mentioned crochet? or should they all be knit? I would love a crochet pattern...

Thanks

I believe all the ones mentioned so far are knit. There are several crochet patterns out there, though.

I'm knitting my first Sheepy Pants now and so far it's VERY easy I haven't made it to the gusset yet, but she sure makes the short rows simple. Thanks for all the input!!

I like Curly Purly - EASY - and Sheepy Pants as well. The ones I don't like, can't remember the name, but you knit two legs and then seamed them other - not a fan. Knitting in the round makes much nicer soakers IMO.

After lots of consideration, I've ended up with the LTK ribby wrap pattern, the Sheepy Pants pattern, and the Curly Purly soaker pattern, and been especially pleased with the results from the LTK and SP patterns, although I don't have a baby to try them out on yet. I was trying to minimize how much I spent on patterns until I knew how wool would work out for us, but I have to say that you really do get what you pay for from the first two patterns. I like the Curly Purly pattern just fine, too, but I'm really excited to make up some more longies/shorties and wraps! (Only problem is, I'm running out of time...
