s/o: did your child wean at 5x birthweight? - Page 3

Well, mine's about 5x his birth weight now and is down to a few minutes total a day.
Let's see...

Not sure how much my oldest weighed when he weaned at 5 years old ...

My second born weighed around 53 lbs when we weaned at age 7 ... about 5.5 times his birthweight.

My third continues to nurse at almost 7 ... weighs 63 lbs... so is almost 8 times her birthweight.

My fourth continues to nurse at 3.5 years old ... was 10lbs 14oz at birth ... is around 42lbs now ... and no signs of stoping anytime soon.

My fifth ... well, she's only 14 months old, so we'll have to wait and see!

Both DS's were about 7 1/2 lbs at birth and both weaned at about 4X birthweight (which was about 2 1/2 for DS1 and was about 3 3/4 DS2)

DS is about 3x his birthweight. He is 10 months old, so obviously not weaning anytime soon. He still barely get solids (some days he will have one serving of solids - self fed - some days no servings)

It was true for my middle daughter who self-weaned at 2 and 25lbs. My littlest is still nursing and is more than 5x her birthweight(4lbs at birth, 24lbs now) as she is just 15mos. I'm hoping we make it to 3.

uh...no.
DD was 9 pounds at birth, so 5 tijmes that is 45 pounds..she is 4.5 years old and only 41 pounds....I expect 45 pounds would be around her 5th birthday. She weaned at 2.5, when she was about 32 pounds.

Ds...was 5 lbs at birth and is now 21 lbs at 15 months....I expect he'll hit 25 lbs by his 2nd birthday, and doubtr he'll self wean by then.

Not true for us. DS was 6 lb 6 oz at birth and we mutually agreed to wean at 4.75 when he was 41 or 42 lb, so between 6 and 7 times his birth weight. DD is still going at age 3.5, is 26 lb, and was 6 lb 8 oz at birth, so now is 4 times her birth weight, so maybe it will be true for her?

Interesting. Ds1 was 8lbs at birth, but only 30 when he weaned. So 10 lbs shy. But I was pregnant and that could have thrown things off.

I wonder if it holds more true for smaller babies, however.

Oh man, DS was 10lb 12oz at birth. He only weighs 24lbs now at 21mo. We've got a long road ahead of us. LOL.

Not true for us. DS is about 50 lbs at 38 months and no sign of weaning. He was 8 lbs. 15 oz at birth.
kind of close.
I encouraged my dd to wean just before her 3rd birthday, but she would still occasionally nurse for a minute or two until just recently, when she crossed 30 lbs. She would hit 5x at 35 lbs.

Dd1 was 10 lbs, 12 1/2 oz at birth - and I think 5x that is 56 lbs, 13 oz. I haven't been much for keeping track of weight, but I think she weighed at least that much when she weaned.

Dd2 was 10 lbs, 2 oz at birth -- and 5 times that is 50 lbs, 10 oz. She is now 4 and I think she weighed 44 lbs when she was weighed last week. She mainly nurses to fall asleep at night and on waking in the morning. I'm not sure if she'll still be nursing at 50 or 51 lbs -- it seems like a 50/50 chance either way.

DD was 8 lbs 7 oz at birth, 20 lbs at 4 mo, 24 lbs. at 6 mo and 27 lbs at 9mo - so 30ish lbs. wouldn't be out of the norm. That being said, I'm predicting that she will be between 27-29 lbs. for a while - she's really thinned out in the last month between being sick, nursing strike, and the 9mo growth spurt.

Going by the 5x bw - she should be 42 lbs. when she weans... I'll have to see if that is true!

I find this idea interesting please answer the companion poll I have created to this thread at http://www.mothering.com/discussions....php?t=1073323

This is interesting - dd was 6lbs 2oz at birth, weaned at about 2years 10 months when I was pg with ds, but then went back to the breast and nursed till 4.5 years so I'm not sure of body weights but think that she was quite a bit more than 30lbs, she's 7 in a few months time and weighs 24kg. DS was 3.8kg he's 4 in a couple of months time and weighs 13kgs, 5 times his birthweight would be 19kg, so we have a while to go but then he shows no sign of stopping soon!!

Well, dd weaned when my milk dried out when I was expecting ds... so I don't know if that counts as self weaning or not? Either way, she was not 5x her birth weight when she weaned. DS however, that estimate held true.

My daughter weaned herself between 2.5 and 3 and only weighs currently 27 lbs. She is 3.5 now. She weighed 8 lbs 9 ozs at birth. She is going to be 10 before she weighs 44 lbs. I am pregnant and due in 6 weeks, and hope that is not the case. I can't imagine bf a kid until they weigh almost 50 lbs!!

1 year is only 17 lbs

7.13 * 5=35.65 Not there yet and baby at 1 year is only 17 lbs!!

My son was born at 7lb, 7oz, and he weaned at age 3 1/2, at which point, if I recall correctly... I had to do quite a bit of searching, but he was about 48lb when he weaned, so over the 5x birth weight amount.

Best Wishes!

I wonder if it would be more accurate to calculate 5/3 of the baby's 12mo weight rather than 5X the birthweight. :

All of my kids weaned well below 5X their birthweights.

DS was 8 lbs 14pz at birth and weaned at 4.25 (CLW) and at about 4X his birthweight.

DD1 was 7.5 lbs at birth and weaned at 2.5 (though I'm not sure this was truly a CLW). I think she was about 30 lbs then, which would also be 4X her birthweight.

DD2 weaned (accidentaly MLW) at 14mo. But I can try to calculate how old she would have been if she'd weaned naturally. I can't even figure out from when she weaned off bottles because I switched her to sippy cups before she was "ready to wean" and then we kept up the sippy cups for bedtime water long after both girls needed to suckle.

She was 9 lbs at birth but only 18 lbs by a year. I don't think she hit 5X her birthweight until 2nd grade! 4X her birthweight probably happened around age 4.
