Book recommendation for 7-9 year olds

and some 6 year olds. We just finished reading Roald Dahl's The BFG to our 7 almost 8 year old, and he has enjoyed it like almost no other book we've read. He's been on a Roald Dahl kick for a while but this is the best one so far. Reading it aloud is really fun because the premise is that the giants speak English oddly--such chittering to chiddlers means chatting to children--so children who enjoy using language playfully get a big kick out of it. It is classic Dahl, with lots of things being 'disgusting!" and over-the-top drama concerning unpleasantries. If your kid likes that he or she will love the BFG. Plus the friendship between the BFG and the little girl is really lovely. I am recommending because while listening to dh reading to ds I would hear long bouts of giggling from ds.

The BFG is a definite favorite around here, too!

It's the best. We are reading Dahl's The Witches now and ds finds it a little scary. Also, he cannot get over the fact that the grandma smokes cigars though she is a good character.

Oh we ADORE Dahl around here :

DD is reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory right now (as I did at her age). The Witches is a favorite as is Matilda and James and the Giant Peach.

I haven't read The BFG. I'll grab it next time I'm at the library.

WOW! I didn't know that Roald Dahl helped write the screenplay for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. No wonder I love that movie so much. You learn something new every day.
