I looked into this and shea butter last year but did not get any information that made it seem like it would provide reliable sun protection so I went with Badger instead..

Sunscreen or suntan lotion? My grandfather used to slather himself in coconut oil and go lie out in the sun to tan. Mother was amazed he didn't die of skin cancer... the stuff burned him a rich, deep brown. Given that, I wouldn't tend to use it for sunscreen.

I used it last summer after hearing that it was a natural sunscreen. I burnt...and I'm olive. Lol.

Yeah, no...not the greatest alternative.

Yeah, I read about this on another forum, and now I'm nice and golden brown.... Not what I was going for at all.... I did hear that olive oil works as a sunscreen, but I'm too afraid to try it now.

I did successfully use shea butter last summer. I mixed it with some other oils to make it more spreadable - probably coconut oil. I put it on my face every morning during the summer. I noticed after a couple of weeks that my shoulders were browner than my face. (I didn't put any SPF on my shoulders on a daily basis.)

I didn't rely on it when I was expecting to be in the sun for a long time, however, just for daily use. Pulling a few weeds, etc. I used something stronger when going to the pool.

Shea Butter on the high end when ideal can provide approx 8 SPF, but because it is a natural product it depends on how it was processed, age and other variables. It can often be much lower.

I use coconut oil all the time. It has an SPF of 4-6 depending on the quality. Olive oil is another good one with an SPF of 4. I am on a grapeseed oil kick right now but I do not know what its SPF is. :

Raw Coconut Oil Sunscreen

I have been using raw coconut oil on myself and my children for a few years now. Works grate!!
The oil must soak into the skin becoming mat in order to offer the necessary protection. If shinny it will amplify the sun causing a burn. When properly applied it works the same as standard sunscreen. Limited exposure and requires reapplication. Good for everyday use. Non-toxic::

Coconut oil will not protect the skin from UVA/UVB rays. It will actually increase your chances of burning.

sorry for sqeezing in, but where do you buy badger sunlotion??

Coconut oil has no sunscreen properties. It won't do anything as a sunscreen.

Olive oil also has no sunscreen properties.

Avocado butter has an SPF of approx 4.
