Selling a gift card...worth it? Rude?

DP's father gave us a $100 gift card for our baby (who's due July 21st). It's for Target, and although i <3 target...i don't really NEED anything from Target. Sure, i could easily spend it, but what i really need is to finish off our diaper stash and buy a dresser.

I'm thinking if i sell the gift card on ebay, i'll bring in NEARLY $100 (am i right? I checked out other gift card auctions and they were all about 1-2$ less than the actual gift card amount).

I can take that money and buy a used dresser at the thrift store...not to mention preemie prefolds (for doublers), disposable diaper liners (we're in an apartment w/o our own w/d - i don't want to wash super poopy dipes in the public laudromat), diaper pail, wipes, etc.

If i use the card at Target i can still purchase a couple of needs...baby toiletries, thermometer, etc...but i'm thinking i'll get that stuff at my shower - whereas nobody will probably get me cd's.

I don't need clothes either...i have WAY too many due to freebies (I'm not complaining).

Advice? TIA!

I don't think it's rude. I'm sure he'd rather you use the money for things you really need rather than just spending the gift card on random "stuff".

I thought they sold dressers at Target. I'd probably buy that, and some other things like groceries, and use the money saved for other things.

Do you have a car seat? That's what I used my target GC on a britex carseat

Rude? no.

Yeah, but their furniture is pretty crappy, and way too expensive for the quality. I've learned my lesson about Target furniture! The OP would be able to get a much better one used at the thrift store.

Rude, no. I wouldn't sell it though, I'd just hang on to it until I did need something at target.

Does target.com sell cloth diapers?

Do you have a Super Target that has a grocery section?

ETA: They do sell Bum Genius, Bumkins and diaper service quality prefolds.

You could also see if what you're looking for, cloth diapers, etc is sold online if not available in your local Target store and buy it that way.

Target does sell CDs online, as well as lots of other stuff you don't find in the store. I'd keep it, and make yourself a nice little "gift basket" of stuff you'll need later. Bottles and extra nipples (if you'll be using bottles), sippy cups, socks, healthcare/first aid stuff (toothbrush, thermometer, gripe water, Pedialyte for next flu season, hairbrush, nail clippers, etc.) Plan ahead, not just for the newborn stage, and you'll find LOTS of uses for that card!

I never intended to shop at BRU or Target for my baby b/c I wanted all-natural stuff for him. Turns out, when you need Pedialyte, you need it! And their socks are great, I always need more undershirts, yadda yadda.

Oh yes, the toddler socks are very good.

Not rude. I'd sell it and get what you need. I agree that Target has crappy furniture for the most part. I'd rather buy used furniture that was better built.

I think it is rude to sell a gift card. What about non-baby specific things like shampoo, laundry soap, etc?

If something is gifted to you then it's yours to do what you please. It is certainly NOT rude to sell a gift card.

I don't think it would be rude to sell, but I also wouldn't sell a gift card to Target simply because I would end up spending that much there over the course of the year anyway. You could probably unload it easily on the TP (or Craig's List) as well as ebay.

That said, I would not get the cloth diapers from Target. For about the same $ you can get much better DSQ ones online.

I wouldn't have a problem with selling it since you have things you need that you could buy with the money.

I would probably not go through the hassle of selling it since there is always something to buy at Target - even if it is food, clothes for me, toys for future birthday presents. If I spent it on things for the house that I would normally buy, than I would put aside the cash from my own account to spend towards baby stuff.

I don't think its rude. I give Target gift cards all of the time for baby gifts.

I look at the intention of the giver. When someone gives something like a Target gift card its because they have no idea what to get you but want to be helpful. I doubt your DP's father is somehow emotionally invested in you getting something from a generic big box store.

Also, I don't think gift cards on those sites sell for 1-2 dollars less than their value. That's what people list them for maybe, but in the end I think you take a 10% loss on a gift card. I know I wouldn't go through the trouble of buying a strangers gift card online, having it mailed, etc, to save $1.

I agree that you'll lose at least 10% on the gift card if you sell it online, not to mention the cost of posting the sale on Ebay (their fees are expensive IMHO).

The biggest reason I wouldn't do it would be fraud through Ebay - if the seller tries to stiff you for the $$$ in the end by saying they never got the card (this is if you use PayPal). Sure, if you have insurance and tracking on the shipment you can prove they got it but who wants that hassle.

Do you have any friends that are big Target shoppers? Would they want to buy it from you?

Otherwise, I'd keep it and stock up on things you'll need for your baby once past the baby stage. I love their underwear and socks.

They do sell dressers at target...but not for cheap (I can probably find a thrift store one for under $20 vs. $100+ for a dresser at target)
