Ava Jo/ birth story

My little girl was born 3/24/09, 8lbs, 20 inches.

Ava Jo Kelly made her way in to the world very much like my first child…with me doubting the entire time, lol. I woke up at 430am with contractions that were about ten minutes apart. My DP was asleep in our living area, my DS asleep in the bed. I labored by myself trying to time contractions for about 4 hours. I tried to lay back down, “just in case” but that didn’t work out too well. I read, paced, tried to eat some French toast, read some more. At 830am I woke DP and said he might want to get the birth pool ready. He very leisurely woke up, which at the time I found very irritating. He made himself some coffee, was trying to have some conversation with me and I finally got up and walked outside. I had this moment of being pissy with DP and also wondering if I could let myself be super vulnerable with him in the intense parts of labor (we have only been coupled for a year or so). I walked down the driveway and (by this time I was breathing through contractions, they were about 3 minutes apart) squatted by the fence during a contraction. My DP had followed me and saw that I was crying (not due to pain, but because I was VERY emotional) and holding on to the fence, but also noticed that most of the cows had come to where I was at. We live on a farm with about 25 mama cows, most pregnant. I laughed when I noticed it and would like to believe that they somehow knew and were cheering me on in their own little way. DP just called it “eerie”, lol. He had my MW on the phone and she casually asked me when I wanted her to come out. I had no idea, I honestly thought I would be laboring until the evening or something so it was agreed that I would call her back after I got into the tub for a bit.

I was much better after my emotional moment. We headed up to my MIL house down the drive (we live in a fifth wheel, no room for a birth tub), DP set up the tub and called the MW to come over. She came and checked me at 1030am. She asked how far along I thought I was, told me to tune in to my cervix, I said “2”? I was at an 8! That was so comforting, to know that my uterus was actually doing something with all that work! The contractions at this point were strong but manageable with a bit of breathing. We decided to go ahead with her breaking my waters, which was done by her applying a teeny bit of pressure to them. I started shaking, transition and nerves I think because I knew that things were going to start happening quickly, and with a lot of strength. DP was great, applying pressure on my back during the cxs. I labored on hands and knees mostly, in the water. MW suggested I flip around to help the lip of the cervix get out of the way. 1129 am she was born after two pushes into DP’s hands in the water. It was so smooth and beautiful and intense.

She is a great little nurser and DS adores her. We are blissfully sleep-deprived, but each day gets a little easier with that too.

Congrats mamas!

DDC crashing - just want to say congrats, mama, and the part about the cows cheering you on made me crack up. If most of them are pregnant I'm sure that's what they were doing...too cute!!
