Nursing never worked out with my older child, so even though I'm an experienced parent I'm a breastfeeding newbie with my 8-week-old. I have nursed him in public before, but only at church where I knew everyone would be very supportive, and in the pedi waiting room where I feel like they can't complain.

Well, today we went to a big event at the library, and he got hungry in the middle of my 4yo doing a craft. There was no place to sit down, so I realized I would have to nurse him standing up, in the sling... something I'd never done. I very awkwardly got him latched on, and looked up to see the library volunteer who was supervising the craft watching me.

"Can I just say..." Oops, I thought. "It makes me so happy to see you doing that. It really feeds my heart."

Awwww. :

When DS was just a couple months old, I was nursing him in the airport, and a lady walked by and smiled at us. And I overheard her say to her friend, "Aw, I miss breastfeeding."
Then another time at the airport, right around Christmas, the flight was super horribly delayed and it was really late. The airline brought out a bunch of drinks and snacks for the stranded passengers. I was nursing DS, and he was nodding off, and this lady, another passenger, grabbed a bottle of water and brought it over to me. I thought it was so sweet and thoughtful, she didn't say anything about nursing, but she must have known that nursing makes you thirsty. It was a really nice way to support a breastfeeding mom without actually saying it outright.

DS is going through ANOTHER phase of almost constant nursing, so at the grocery store the other day I was nursing him in the sling while walking around and shopping. I noticed this very elderly woman staring at me and prepared for a glare or a negative comment, but then she gave me a huge smile and said "I just love your 'scarf' -- too bad they don't sell those at the store."

When my first was about 5 months old I had him in an OTSBH sling and he was nursing away totally covered. This elderly man (80's?) made a bee line for me and said "You have a baby in that don't you?" and I kinda fumbled with my words and said "Yes I do" and he then asked to see him and I said "Well he's nursing." And this sweet gentleman looked at me and said "What else would he be doing? Let me see please. AWWW! Brings back such fond memories of my Momma. I nursed till I was almost 5 and I still remember how loved I felt. You are doing more for your son than you will ever know." and he walked away. I stood there and cried for about 10min. I was in shock!

I carried what he said with me for years. Every negative remark has been replaced by that one comment. I can clearly see his face and the twinkle in his eyes when he saw my baby....and the way he looked at me! I felt as though I had become a Goddess for a split second. Always will I remember that wonderful man.

When my 3rd child was about 6 months old, we went for a home visit to Germany. During a shopping trip with my SIL we sat down in a café and I nursed my son. The waitress brought our drinks, looked and smiled at us and said: "Oh how nice - I did the same with my son for over 11 months. That's still the healthiest thing there is."
