Cause if they are, I think I can "handle" making one. If you have one (ultimate baby wrap, hug-a-bub, moby wrap) could you tell me the measurements of the fabric, and the type of fabric used (100% cotton, or lycra mix, etc)? Is it all the same width, or is it wider in some areas of the strip....

Not to offend anyone, but if this is as simple as I think it is, the ones selling them are totally ripping people off. : maybe I should start selling them.....:LOL

http://www.mayawrap.com/sewSling.shtml there ya go...also you are paying for good quality fabrics/sewing/supplies and overhead when you buy from someone...I don't think it's a ripoff just because of all that is involved...but if you can do it yourself yes it's sooooooo much cheeper and you don't have to pay for overhead ect. lol. BTW, I LOVE my Maya Wrap, and am so glad they give directions on how to make one.

Here's the page I came across when I was looking for Didymos wrap instructions for a friend:
Baby Slings - How, Why & Where
I was AMAZED at the huge load of links - plenty of info on sewing, tying, buying...whatever! And yes, they are just a long rectangle of fabric, hemmed up. Very easy to sew.

Yay! I was right! does anyone know how long and the width of the fabric used, just so I don't buy too little an amount....?

i make my own slings and i use non stretchy material that looks the same from both sides. i think i make them 2 and a 1/2 yards long and about 35 - 40 inches wide.

I know the price of some of the wrap slings seems ubsurd BUT keep in mind that some of them are made of very high quality fabric. It's a little more understandable when you consider the higher cost of materials. Also if they are handwoven that contributes to a higher cost but also to a better quality product.

theocentric- I guess I used the wrong term when I said that the people who make slings are ripping people off.... because since I wrote that and I went to the store to but 5 yards of stretch cotton, it would have cost me about 25$. But that is in Canadian dollars. I didn't buy it, needless to say, as I'd like to find a better deal. Anyways, I would love to support a SAHM who makes these wraps, but I have a small amount of "spending money"
I also see that they are just a long rectangle of fabric, hemmed up, and I can make that, so why not?

Anyways, I went to the store and found a roll of wool t-knit. I thought, that would be perfect, but it's $30.00 a meter. Has anyone had experience with that fabric?

I made one for myself... tried to do a rolled hem... what a disaster! My store-bought one (Ellaroo at www.peppermint.com) is so much better! Better material, etc.

I had the same attitude until I tried to do it myself. BUt I am no seamstress!

Good luck.

I like five meters for the length. I made mine really narrow at like eighteen inches, for an older baby, to cut down on bulk.
