Is it wrong to use Angel Food - Page 2

It's a co-op, and they state there are no limits, so there arent any ethical concerns with using it.

OTOH, I have not found the food to be the kind we eat (way too much pork, processed meats, etc) and although it's a lot of meat for the price, with careful shopping I can do as well or better. It might be worth it if I bought several boxes at once, but we don't have a freezer to keep the food in.

Hmmm... my mom bought us two boxes- the "regular" which has meat and some other processed things in it and the "fresh fruit and veggie box" which was actually really good. Off the top of my head it had a bag of apples, a bag of oranges, a bag of potatoes (they were good quality), 4 big yams, a mango, and a canteloupe- I really enjoyed it actually! In the regular box there was some sandwich cookies in individual packages (not on the healthy foods list but DS likes them for a snack in the car), a bag of pinto beans, a container of ham that was sliced thin like lunch meat (I made a meal of the beans and ham in the crockpot that was yummy), there is chicken breasts (but the kind that come with skin and bones, so DH will have to prepare those), I think there was eggs and milk, tomato sauce in a jar, italian sausage (frozen), 1 lb ground beef, and maybe 6 country fried steaks that I am really looking forward to cooking up with some gravy- just the kind of thing I would never buy on my own but will nonetheless enjoy.

I didn't have a problem with any of the food at all though the italian sausage was a little bland. The fruits and veggies were really good. They are now offering a new option of seafood which looks to be frozen but good, not breaded or processed or anything.

I was kind of psyched about that because for what I eat the standard boxes just aren't useful, but looking at the price and what's included I definitely do better for an equivalent volume of good, fresh seafood at my local Asian market.

I love the Angelfood concept, but I think people really should be cautious and make sure that they're getting a good deal before they buy -- there can be the tendency to assume that AFM food is cheaper by default, which just isn't always the case.

It's actually *better* if more people participate.

That said, I read this:

http://www.columbiamissourian.com/st...ses-questions/

Quote:
Tax records from that year show the Wingos and two of their sons earned a combined total in excess of $2.1 million for leading the ministry, up from just less than a combined $323,000 a year earlier.

Their combined salaries dipped to $501,472 in 2007, records showed.
...

Luke Erickson, a pastor at Mountain Christian Church near Baltimore, said church leaders like himself received an explanation from the ministry for the high salaries.

"They've invested a lot in it ... there was some kind of compensation given back to them by Angel Food and it was reflected in a large salary in one year," Erickson said.
That doesn't really bother me at all. If they have really been working on this since 1994 I bet there were years they hardly made anything. Probably didn't get to buy a house or save for retirement. Now that the agency is running well (food to 500,000 families!) it makes sense (to me) that those who worked so hard to get it where it is now should get some "catch up" money. And while $500K is a lot of money, it's not a crazy amount for three adults working more than full time. Lots of non proffits have very well paid administors.

I'm not saying they didn't break the law, just the fact that they got a $600K housing allowance *once* doesn't bother me--- they need somewhere to live and what if they have been putting all their money into it for the last 15 years.

I ordered one box and it is coming on saturday. We will see how it goes. Thanks for the replies!

certainly not unethical. the more people participate the more in bulk they can buy and the better the food they can get. more is better. its just a different way of shopping.

and really I don't care how much money the organizers make so long as people keep getting good food for less.

my box came today and I am very impressed. The steaks especially look awesome!! I was in and out quickly and everyone was super nice. This is going to save us a lot and help us be debt free so much quicker. Thanks again for the replies :
