Question about Pfaff Sergers

I know LuvMy2Kiz owns a Pfaff! Anyone else have any experience with a Pfaff serger? I want to make some dipes and have been told these do well with numerous layers of fabric, like hemp.
There are a couple Pfaff Hobby-Lock 788s on ebay right now. I'm wondering how these would do.
TIA!

The 788 is ok for a basic serger, it's a pretty old model though. It serges really slow, even when you change the speed, it's still slow. And it didn't do so great on hemp, 2 layers was ok, and when you try to make it serge an inside corner, the stitching is off the edge, doesn't look very pretty. If you can swing it I'd go for one of the newer models. Mine is the low end 4752 and I love it (as if you couldn't tell by how much I rave about it constantly :LOL)

That is what I figured. No wonder I could afford it. :LOL
Let me know if you ever upgrade and want to sell the one you have

I went to a Pfaff dealer to look at some machines today. She quoted me $799 for a Pfaff Coverlock 4852. Is this a good price? I have nothing to compair it to. She said they retail for $1100 but she would sell me the floor model for $799. I would be she would go down even more if she was willing to do this without me asking her to lower the price. Would you recomend the Coverlock type machine over the Hobylock for making diapers?
Thanks for your help.

that's a pretty good price, but will you actually use the coverlock stitch? I don't, never have :LOL My dealer sells that machine for 999.00(or was it 1099.00??) If you just want a basic serger that can handle hemp, and cost is an issue, the low end 4752 (what I have) is a great machine. Like I said before, my mom has a 4842, one step up from my machine, and she prefers mine With the 4852, you're basically paying a few hundred dollars more for the coverlock stitch, if you won't use it, i wouldn't buy it

You have been so helpful. Pfaff should hire you
Would the coverstich be good to use to cover elastic? The dealer near me didn't carry a hobylock machine. I bet they could order one. I hate to buy one without using it first.

It probably could, but is it worth the extra few hundred dollars if you don't know if you'll use it? I am cheap I know :LOL Mine doesn't carry my machine instock either, but they will special order for you Oh, and most of the sales people work on commission, so don't let them talk you into more machine than you think you need, esp. if you're on a limited budget.
