How interesting!!!!

Thread Starter
I was just looking at a VERY mainstream parenting board and there was a thread about slings. I had thought this was going to happen but the post just reaffirmed what I thought.
Slings/wraps/mai tais have become very "popular". It's seriously like the thing to have. I have a feeling breastfeeding is next

I've noticed that cloth diapers are trendy now too.

I have frequent sightings of babywearing in the background of movies/commercials/TV shows
post #4 of 12
There are too many celebrities babywearing for it not to be trendy.

I've noticed this too. Honestly, when DS was born 4.5 years ago, the only baby carrier I had ever even heard of was the Baby Bjorn, and I thought I only became aware of other carriers through this site, but I see even the most mainstream, trendy mamas I know IRL using pretty silk slings, mei tais, etc. -- it's definitely the new cool thing.

But I don't want to be trendy! (sort of kidding.....)

Ha -- I think lots of mamas share your sentiment! I used to see the Hotsling recommended here regularly, and then Target started carrying it and all of a sudden no one liked it anymore.

I know lots of mammas don't want to really be trendy like that, but I have a confession. I never really knew about babywearing or even MDC till I was spending a LOT of time shaking my head in confusion over the discussions on the W.T.E. board. A very friendly and oh so crunchy momma was on there avidly promoting anti-circ & anti-vax & I LOVED her! She is probably one of the main reasons I knew that my little boy could keep all his "parts." She was constantly promoting breast feeding and babywearing & I cant help but believe that if more of us took the time to voice our opinions and bear the sometimes ill effects that it can bring (that wonderful mamma had to take a break from the board while I was still preggo cause she was becoming far to stressed) then maybe we could touch more people than we will ever know. I know, personally, next time I'm preggo I will be frequenting that board as well as this one, simply because sooooo many mommies to be don't even know MDC exists despite having beliefs that fit VERY well here. I just hope I could be to one of them what that angel of a momma was to me.

i think it's getting popular for a number of reasons. the celebrity thing definitely helps. second, people really have the desire to buy stuff and feel that they need stuff for their baby. a lot of other aspects of attachment parenting are so liberating because they don't require stuff (no crib, no bottles, etc) - but people like stuff. and babywearing is so varied these days, there are so many styles and designs and pretty fabrics and such, it's possible to accumulate quite a lot of stuff (not that i think that's totally bad, i have quite a collection of babywearing devices myself). probably a reason for CD's getting more popular too. third, i think it appeals to people in our active never-give-yourself-a-break society because everyone is always trying to multi-task and be on-the-go and that's hard to do with a small infant unless you're babywearing. those stupid buckets are huge and heavy and a pain to schlepp around, and don't leave you with a free hand. people see someone like me walking with my baby on my back and holding the hands of my other two kids or pushing a grocery cart through the store and have literally chased me down to ask me where i got my carrier. it just looks useful and liberating, i think. the fact that baby is so happy in there is just a bonus for some people i think, rather than the reason to babywear in the first place IYKWIM.

but i wouldn't get too excited about breastfeeding being next, especially after all the press that UA Violation Hanna Rosin is getting :

Yep I see them everywhere now. It's not even a surprise to anyone.

And I guess my church is just the center of BWing mamas lol. I had to go to the "back" w/ DD b/c she was fussing and about 10 other mamas were milling around, baby in sling. rotfl

I see more moms pushing their stroller but baby is in sling or hotsling when I go to malls.

My very mainstream cousins are all bfing and bwing mamas. they're moby (newborn) and bjorn (after newborn) but it's still bwing.
