Can someone please tell me why the Meningococcal C vax is only aproved in kids 11 and up in the US?

I think they give it alot younger in Canada?

I seen a commercail on it the other day and they were showing kids that were alot younger then 11 for the vax then said the vax was for kids 11 and up....

Not sure, but one thing I remember thinking when I was reading about this vaccine was that according to their numbers it was the young age that was more at risk, but also think it said efficacy was low and/or immunity waned quickly. This was from the CDC's pink book.

It's given starting at 2 months here...

I can't imagine the product here would be so different from an equivalent one in the States or that babies here somehow miraculously tolerate it better or develop better immunity.

CDC Pink Book -

Menactra (MCV) and Meningococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (MPSV) are the vaccines licensed for use in the US. Are these the same vaccines for there? Which serogroups are covered if there is a different one? MCV (recommended more, supposed better efficacy and longer duration of protection) contains serogroups A, C, Y and W-135.

Quote:
Infants younger than 12 months of age have the highest rates of disease.
Quote:
In 2001, 65% of cases among infants aged less than 1 year were caused by serogroup B, for which no vaccine is available in the United States.
About MPSV-

Quote:
The vaccine is generally not effective in children younger than 18 months of age. The response to the vaccine is typical of a T-cell independent antigen, with an age-dependent response, and poor immunogenicity in children younger than 2 years of age.
Quote:
In one study,
efficacy declined from more than 90% to less than 10% 3 years
after vaccination among children who were younger than
4 years of age when vaccinated.
Quote:
Routine vaccination of civilians with MPSV is not recommended because of its relative ineffectiveness in children younger than 2 years of age (the age group with the highest risk for sporadic disease) and because of its relatively short duration of protection.
It doesn't give much info on MCV but it isn't for the before age two group.
